ghost of miles Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Not an artist I've checked out before, but a buddy of mine recommended his latest on Verve. Anybody have an IMO on this release? Quote
Free For All Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 (edited) I haven't heard Heartcore yet, but I sure enjoyed his last, The Next Step. I thought the tunes were engaging and the group interacted nicely. There is one of those "Hot Box" reviews of the new one in the new Downbeat- it received mixed reviews FWIW. jazzypaul Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 It's not as good as the next step, which I consider to be a modern masterpiece, but it certainly is very good. The casiotone jam on one of the tunes is tasty, even with it using a casiotone. Quote

Big Wheel Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 I haven't heard The Next Step, but this was one of my favorites of the year. Have only listened to it all the way through a couple of times, but man, those tunes and textures are wonderful, both spiritual and unsettling at the same time. It bears mentioning that before I heard this record, I was a skeptic on Rosenwinkel who couldn't understand why every guitar player I knew was making such a fuss about him. Quote
Big Wheel Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Oh, and let me guess--it was McDonough who panned it in Downbeat, wasn't it? Quote
Free For All Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Paul de Barros *** John Corbett *** Jim Macnie *** 1/2 John McDonough * 1/2 You are correct, sir. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 The guy is becoming a charicature of himself. McDonough, I mean, not Rosenwinkle. Quote

Trumpet Guy Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 Wow--I am loving this cd "Heartcore"!! So beautiful with so much mystery...What a work! Big Wheel--I'm surprised you never dug Rosenwinkel 'til now.I guess that might be part of the reason you were obviously non-plussed by my cd... Quote
