Tom 1960 Posted May 11, 2007 Author Report Posted May 11, 2007 JSngry, to answer your question concerning whether Dell provided a backup disc for McAfee? The answer is no. That's the first thing I looked for after I found that I couldn't load the Zone Alarm program onto the computer. Would they provide me with a new disc? Doubtful. When I spoke to the service rep on the phone yesterday, I made mention of going out and purchasing a replacement disc. No offer was tendered to mail me a new one instead. Jim A., as to what exactly I need? Well, Microsoft Vista does have a firewall program and that currently operating. Is that satisfactory enough? You guys may know better than I? As for a anti-virus program that's something I should take care of although RoadRunner does support some sort of anti-virus program. So I'm not completely naked out there. AVG is a product a friend has mentioned to me also and that may be an option? At this point in time, I'm real reluctant to further screw around with this system. When it comes to computers, my knowledge is very limited. I may get my friend from work over here next week, who knows his shit and have him guide my through this. I really appreciate the input here guys and please continue to offer your thoughts if you like? Right now everything is running great and the temptation to mess with things is low. This past week has been very frustrating. I just want to spend alittle time online without getting pissed off. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 Sorry I caused problems. Does your internet provider offer protection? I'm pleased with the stuff I get from Charter. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted May 11, 2007 Author Report Posted May 11, 2007 Chuck, no need for apologies. It made alot of sense to me at the time. Who would've known? Supposedly Road Runner offers an anti virus program. I did however just click on the Windows Security icon on the lower right hand side of the screen and while it's states the firewall program is ON, it doesn't detect an anti virus program on the computer. Who knows? Quote
JSngry Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 JSngry, to answer your question concerning whether Dell provided a backup disc for McAfee? Did they provide you with any system/software discs? I mean, the system came w/some stuff like Office or something, right? You paid for that as part of the price of the system. And if you "upgraded" to any other software, you paid for that too. So what are you supposed to do in case of a system crash and you need to reload the software that you paid for? Maybe the McAfee was just a trial version. In that case, I could see them not providing you w/any way to restore it. But still, if it's a 90-day trial & you didn't get 90 days out of it... On my daughter's laptop, all the stuff like the anti-virus, etc. was on an innocuous looking/titled "Applications" disc. No brand names or anything mentioned, just some generic terms in fine print like "Internet Software", "Anti-Virus Software", etc. If Dell's no longer even giving out that much, that's a big suck for them.
