David Ayers Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Here What will they think of next. Research shows alcohol can make you drunk? There ar emore fish in the sea? The sky is up? Interestingly there is no thread for discussion of jazz, in general, as such, on this board, so I posted this here. Quote
rockefeller center Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Dr Wills said: "I am not trying to say that all jazz musicians are crazy, but I have highlighted a trend in mental health problems that is comparable to other creative people." After "studying" 40 people (out of?). This is ridiculous. Quote

Simon Weil Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 (edited) Whatever these "studies" are, they aren't science. I mean, honestly, coming to some sort of conclusion on Bolden (Daniel A's link) who: 1) We don't have any records by (apart from Chuck's cylinder that is). 2) We don't have any interviews by 3) Our knowledge about is, in general, terribly lacking is just amazing. Quite apart from trying to psychoanalyze the poor guy being in appalling taste, you simply don't have any evidence to work on. It's cheap magazine journalism, sensationalist yes, dressed up. In a way, what these articles seem to do is take the old myth of Jazz being the result of black primitives and recast it as a new (attempted) myth of Jazz being the result of emotional primitives - i.e. people with psychological problems. Devious, Unpleasant. Simon Weil Edited September 2, 2003 by Simon Weil Quote
mikeweil Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Just another take on the endlessly repeated story of madness and genius. Not a single one of these scientists seems to get the idea of what a representative study really is. For each jazz musicians with mental problems - they exist, depending on how you define them - there are hundreds living unspectacular lives the press never writes about. But they wouldn't be nearly as "interesting". Tediuos crap. Quote

Seems a major portion of American society suffers from this affliction. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 I'm going to start a study on whether stupid people really can't tell their ass from a hole in the ground. Who's in? Quote
JSngry Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 I'm going to start a study on whether stupid people really can't tell their ass from a hole in the ground. Who's in? In what - their ass or that hole in the ground? Quote
JazzRules Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 I'm going to start a study on whether stupid people really can't tell their ass from a hole in the ground. Who's in? Feel free to study my ass. Women dig it. Doctors are amazed by it. Quote
JSngry Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 But do stupid people try to put a fence post in it? Quote
