Ken Dryden Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 Gee, Kurt Elling is no longer on Blue Note... Instead, he has signed with Concord and recorded such lame songs as The Guess Who's "Undun" and also utilized boring smooth keyboardist/arranger Rob Mounsey (of "I Like the Orange Thing" fame) on his latest CD. Yawn... Quote

Yawn... Kurt is a really nice guy and works hard at his version of the "art form". Not my "cup of tea" as he found out 15 years ago when I said something like "I don't do vocalists". Then he signed with BN - says something about my "commercial" vision. Jazz vocal fans should check him out. Point of reference - I think Mark Murphy is silly. Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 Jazz vocal fans should check him out. Point of reference - I think Mark Murphy is silly. Does this mean that you do or you don't think Elling is equally silly? Quote

Spontooneous Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 "Undun" works a lot better than that Michael Franks tune at the beginning of the disc. Even Kurt sounds disgusted with that one. Quote
JSngry Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 I like "undun." Not at all a bad song. I'm surprised it's just now getting the "jazz treatment". Anybody know offhand who played the flute solo on the original? Quote

Anybody know offhand who played the flute solo on the original? Bjork? C'mon, everyone knows that was composer Randy Bachman on flute. Actually, its Ian Anderson. Quote
JSngry Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 Actually, according to AMG, it's Burton Cummings on flute. All kinds of cliches & stereotypes come to mind about that... I still like the song though. Quote
Bright Moments Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 Jazz vocal fans should check him out. i am a jazz vocal fan - i am not an elling fan. his stuff does nothing for me. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted May 10, 2007 Author Report Posted May 10, 2007 kurt puts much thought and planning into his work, with generally positive, occasionally moving results. his craftsmanship i could not question. as for spontaneity, that's another matter. Quote
GA Russell Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 C'mon, everyone knows that was composer Randy Bachman on flute. I was surprised to hear him pronounce his name on the radio some months ago. He had a weekly program on the CBC. He pronounces his name "Back-mun", not "Bach-mun". Quote

Ken Dryden Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 I didn't request a copy of Elling's new CD, as I recognized it for what it was. I had forgotten about the Michael Franks song, he is always one for writing forgettable songs. "When the cookie jar is empty (Barf!)..." Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 Jazz vocal fans should check him out. Point of reference - I think Mark Murphy is silly. Does Mark Murphy still have a hideous mullet? Quote
Ken Dryden Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 Murphy still had that ridiculous toupe on his dome when he sang at IAJE (2006?) with Kurt Elling, Jon Hendricks and Kevin Mahogany. Quote
rpklich Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 I recall Murphy & Elling sharing the same stage a few years back at the Chicago Jazz Festival. It was very amusing. Quote
etherbored Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 i love this thread. more please. mark's best work, by a mile, have been his two most recent recordings for verve europe ('onice to every heart' and 'love is what stays') produced and played on by german trumpeter till bronner. by the way, is this cover a joke? 'mark murphy sings mostly dorothy fields...' Quote
B. Clugston Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 Actually, according to AMG, it's Burton Cummings on flute. All kinds of cliches & stereotypes come to mind about that... I still like the song though. Burton did play the flute. Quote

Ken Dryden Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 Elling wasn't bad as a part of Dave Brubeck's Cannery Row Suite, premiered at last year's Monterey Festival. I've just never warmed to his voice, though I think his choice of material and the presence of Rob Mounsey are serious drawbacks on his first Concord CD. Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Swimming against the tide of the thread here, but there are some very good things on this CD--the arrangements of "Leaving Again/In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" and "Change Partners/There's No You," as well as the setting of Roethke's "The Waking" and KE's take on "I Like the Sunrise." One of the better vocal releases this year IMO. Quote
