clifford_thornton
Yes, that Black Unity Trio LP is pretty awesome. Hopefully somebody reissues it because downloads just don't cut it.
Guest Bill Barton
Oh, man, I just noticed this thread resurfacing... Has anyone received definitive info on whether he has passed or not? Very sad if so. I heard him numerous times years back when he took part in Bill Cole's various productions at Dartmouth College and with the amazing cooperative trio with Anthony Davis and James Newton. Has anyone else ever summoned up the ghosts of Pablo Casals and Robert Johnson in the same measure? By Myself is a generally unacknowledged masterpiece and the duo material with Julius isn't far behind....
clifford_thornton
I don't know. I've not heard exact date confirmation from my source, who like I said was told by Yusef Mumin, who was close with Abdul and played with him in the Unity Trio. Indeed, the solo cello LP is extraordinary.
randyhersom
Couldn't find Google confirmation, but did discover that his son Raheem Devaughn is a R&B singer who has featured R Kelly as a guest performer on a recording. Are there any other sources that would know?
randyhersom
Only the slightest of confirmation: http://www.jazzhalo.com/artikels/cello.html
randyhersom
With a Billboard top 50 album and a tour with Jill Scott, no wonder you find a lot of Raheem when you look for Abdul Wadud. Makes it unusual that his passing wouldn't be noted and easily discoverable on Google. Here's hoping it's "greatly exaggerated" as Mark Twain once said. randyhersom
This link says he has lived in Charlotte NC as of a couple years ago. http://darkforcesswing.blogspot.com/2007/0...ickerson-w.html
clifford_thornton
I created an account on the Raheem forums (!) and inquired there. Maybe we'll find out.
AndrewHill
I created an account on the Raheem forums (!) and inquired there. Maybe we'll find out. Did you ever get a response over there? A look at Wiki still hasn't added a date of death, so maybe there's still hope he's alive?
AndrewHill
I brought this up because I've been enjoying his contribution to Coon Bid'Ness/Dogan AD; so it would be great to hear he's still around/active.
