Jazzmoose Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Stan Kenton Orchestra - City of Glass (Capitol) I just picked this up a week ago; pretty impressive stuff. On the other hand, it will probably remain my sole Kenton disc... Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Yeah, I bought it strictly to check out what Graettinger was all about. I've tried Kenton before (I'm not sure what, the "Ghastly Loud Concerto" or some such ) but was definitely underwhelmed. This one is impressive! Quote

On the other hand, it will probably remain my sole Kenton disc... I really like this disc. I must admit, some of Graettinger's writing/arranging gives me nightmares! Kinda spooky stuff, no? As for Kenton himself, I absolutely adore the 1940s-early 1950s material, but a good amount of the material after this leaves me cold. The man could put together a band, though, and I don't care if the band swings or not when it comes to City of Glass. It's very rich in composition and arrangement. Quote
