Hot Ptah Posted April 26, 2007 Report Posted April 26, 2007 I have a ticket for the Yellowjackets for this weekend, as I bought tickets for an entire series of concerts. I have not seen them live. Are they worth seeing, or are they fairly dull fusion fare without much interest? Quote
etherbored Posted April 26, 2007 Report Posted April 26, 2007 they're worth seeing. they're more of an acoustic quartet format now than a fusion group, per se. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted April 26, 2007 Report Posted April 26, 2007 they have gone the straight ahead route, still a lot of R&B in their sound, but the albums "Mint Jam", "Time Squared" and "25"(which comes with a bonus DVD) are all worth checking out. Bob Mintzer is a great player, and one of the finest Brecker influenced tenors around. I really believe he and Bob Franceschini are carrying Mike's torch. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 26, 2007 Report Posted April 26, 2007 YES, this is the top level of jazz today. Might be a "fun show" but I would expect more. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 27, 2007 Report Posted April 27, 2007 Gotta mostly side with Chuck on this one. Well, I would anyway if you were asking if you should buy tickets and go. But since you've ALREADY got tickets, then I guess you could go either way. But, if I was pressed for time with other commitments, and I only had so many evenings that week or month that I could afford the time to devote to getting out to listen to some live music -- I'm sure there would be other choices I'd avail myself of. Just saying that there're LOTS of things I'd go to if I had 'free' tickets. But having the time to go to them, anymore -- that's also a factor for me. (And a lot more than when I was in my younger days.) Quote
CJ Shearn Posted April 27, 2007 Report Posted April 27, 2007 seriously, anything the YJ have done starting with "Greenhouse", is excellent. "Mint Jam" is a live album that shows them at their straight ahead best, features a burning workout on Bob Mintzer's rhythm changes "Runferyerlife" and another corker "Statue of Liberty". Quote
