BruceH Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Just wondering if anyone else out there has been digging the recent RVG of Dexter Gordon's Clubhouse---sort of a "lost album." Sure, it may not be the absolute, tippity-top pinnacle of Dexter's creativity, but I've been groovin' to it a lot lately. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Me too! I think the RVG sound great and I listened to it twice yesterday actually. Dex. . .. He was one of a kind! Quote
Shawn Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Don't have the new RVG but I have the old release and the Dexter BN box...definitely like this album...not "top Dex" but very enjoyable. In fact I probably enjoy these sessions more than Gettin' Around (which I've never been overly thrilled by). Quote

mjzee Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Don't have the new RVG but I have the old release and the Dexter BN box...definitely like this album...not "top Dex" but very enjoyable. In fact I probably enjoy these sessions more than Gettin' Around (which I've never been overly thrilled by). I've enjoyed this date for many years, since the first white cover issue. Great song selection, spirited playing, great Freddie. Much, much better than Gettin' Around (which sounds like a practice session, with everyone playing the songs verrrrrry carefully). I also liked "Landslide," but that's a discussion for another day. Quote
brownie Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 I had the original vinyl but have now this RVG reissue. The tunes being played are the same but on the vinyl, side B had them as 'Clubhouse', 'Jodi' and 'Lady Iris B', while the RVG has the same tunes as 'Clubhouse', 'Lady Iris B' and 'Jodi'. The vinyl had it right. The Dexter ballad 'Jodi' is tune 5 on the RVG, not tune 6 as indicated. Tune 6 is 'Lady Iris B'. Nobody at BN seems to have noticed this error Quote
king ubu Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 I'll have to play both "Clubhouse" and "Gettin' Around" again soon (I have the box, no RVGs at all). Both of these were my least favourite albums from the box, besides the one clinker (Landslide - although the title track which is from the date that ended up on "Dexter Calling..." I love!). The tracks I remember liking most are "Devilette" (on Clubhouse) and the beautiful take on "Manha de Carnaval" (on Gettin' Around). Quote
Unk Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 I've got the original CD issue, but haven't listened to it in a while. I know I should. The cover was so ugly, I had to turn it over. Not a high point in Blue Note cover art history. Landslide's definitely a good 'un. Quote
king ubu Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 not that bad a cover, I think (but certainly not one of the best...) Regarding Landslide, it's sort of a patchwork with a few good moments, but not at all a good album... Tommy Turrentine, whom I like quite a bit, is pretty weak on his date, and there's hardly a weirder rhythm section on any DG date than Sir Charles Thompson, Al Lucas and Willie Bobo... The date with Dave Burns isn't closely as successful as the soon-to-follow quartet dates with pee-pee Warren replacing Ron Carter. But then again, I like the whole Dexter Gordon box quite a lot and there's nothing *really* bad in it, in my opinion (my favourites are "Doin' Alright" and "Our Man in Paris"). Quote
bertrand Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 (edited) Do me a favor and please edit that grotesque nickname in the above posting. Let's see how you fare when you're 68 and have prostate problems Bertrand. Edited April 24, 2007 by bertrand Quote
BruceH Posted April 26, 2007 Author Report Posted April 26, 2007 Clubhouse inspired me to re-listen to a lot of Dexter's albums lately. Go! is still my favorite, but Our Man In Paris is right up there. Quote
