brownie Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 The only one I know of: John Coltrane - Live In Japan Quote
mikeweil Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 There was a 2 CD box "The Major Works of John Coltrane", including both takes of Ascension, Om, Kulu Se Mama, and Selflessness - but I think that's not quite what Chewy wants. Besides that and the live in Japan box, that's it. Go for the single CD releases. But it would be a nice idea .... Quote
king ubu Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Would definitely be a nice idea - probably just the studio dates: - Meditations - Ascension - Om - Kulu Se Mama (title track and "Selflessness" only - rest is on "Major Works", right?) - Interstellar Space (how do I get to play the hidden track that's on the disc? my disc has I think one alternate listed on the cover, it's the old jewel case GRP version) - the sessions from "Expression" and the posthumous/fairly recent disc, "Stellar Regions" I still have that "Major Works" 2CD set but not the individual albums/CDs. "Om" is not on CD, and the other individual discs (Kulu Se Mama & Ascension) do not contain anything that one doesn't have either on the "Major Works" or on the "Classic Quartet" sets, is that correct? Btw, I still miss the Vanguard Again and Tunji discs... shame on me, but somehow, that's the only Coltrane I don't have yet, and I'm in no rush (there's a Hank Mobley album I don't have yet, too... tough to settle with the thought that there's nothing new to come!) mikeweil Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 (edited) - Interstellar Space (how do I get to play the hidden track that's on the disc? my disc has I think one alternate listed on the cover, it's the old jewel case GRP version) Hidden track? 1. Mars 2. Leo * 3. Venus 4. Jupiter Variation * 5. Jupiter 6. Saturn Tracks marked * are bonus cuts not on the first LP version but on one of the "Mastery" LP series. That's all there is, AFAIK. Cuscuna included only Kulu Se Mama and Selflessness in the Major Works box because they were the only titles recorded at that session (and with an expanded grouplike the other pieces). At that time he still tried to sort out some of the scattered release patterns. I have to admit I like it much better that way. Edited April 23, 2007 by mikeweil Quote
couw Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Hidden track? check page 14 in the booklet for instructions. Rewinding from track 1 somehow does not work for me. Quote
king ubu Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 That hidden track talk was in another thread, where hidden track(s) on a Satchmo disc and the Billy Bauer VEE CD were mentioned as well. My disc has the same tracklisting you give above. No idea what the hidden track talk is about and how to get them to play... (I have the Bauer as well, never found anything hidden there...) My listing omits the Cosmic one - two tracks with Trane, bass clarinet included. Would definitely be a great thing to have all these sessions, quartet to (almost) big band collected in a nice set - how many discs would that be, 5 or 6? Likely depending on what still lies in the archives... Quote
king ubu Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Hidden track? check page 14 in the booklet for instructions. Rewinding from track 1 somehow does not work for me. You'se talking of "Interstellar Space"? I don't think my booklet has more than 8 pages... but I'll check tonight! Quote
couw Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Hidden track? check page 14 in the booklet for instructions. Rewinding from track 1 somehow does not work for me. You'se talking of "Interstellar Space"? yes, the 2000 digipac re-issue Quote
king ubu Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 ah, I see - I have the old one there, too - sucks with all these various editions. so what then is the ghost track? something worth updating? or is the sonic difference worth getting the newer edition? Quote
Late Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 (edited) So what then is the ghost track? Something worth updating? The hidden track from the 2000 edition isn't really a "song" per se. It's essentially 2:30 of false starts, studio chatter, and Bob Thiele calling out take #s. The only interesting element for me is hearing Coltrane talk to Ali. I guess, initially, Ali was going to play bells as well as his kit, but Coltrane says something to the effect of: "Here, I'll do it" — that's about it as far as I can tell; I couldn't get the disc to rewind any further (past -2:30). For the hidden track alone, it's not worth updating. For the sound, and if you have a particular fondness for that session, I'd say, yes, it is worth updating. The sonic difference isn't huge, but on the later edition, and to my ears, Ali's drums come through with greater clarity. Overall, if you have the earlier edition and can spend the money elsewhere, I'd say do that. Edited April 23, 2007 by Late Quote
king ubu Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Thanks for the feedback, Late! I have some periods where I feel like upgrading discs, I'll keep this in the back of my head but definitely won't do so right now! Quote
mikeweil Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 So that hidden track is the zero index - the disc starts at index "one" when you simply hit the play button. In this case rewinding works. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 23, 2007 Author Report Posted April 23, 2007 i cant believe they havent done a box for it all Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Why a box? (Why a duck?) Why not more unissued single discs? Quote

king ubu Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 Why a box? (Why a duck?) Why not more unissued single discs? Agreed. I don't understand the box set fetish. Guy In my case it's just that I have the music in various editions: digipacks, old GRP jewel case versions, a japanese disc... and I think it would be a very varied set. Anyway, I can live with single discs as well, of course. Expressions has not seen a digipack-reissue, has it? There's still only the old CD? Quote
mikeweil Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 Expressions basically should be re-compiled, as one track turned out to belong to the Stellar Regions sessions. But the desire to complete sessions on CD re-issues and the desire to base them on "original LPs" clash. Still waiting for a re-issue of the Reverend King sessions for probably the same reason. Quote
Kyo Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 Still waiting for a re-issue of the Reverend King sessions for probably the same reason. Yeah, that's the session that I'm also waiting for. What's up with that? They included the tracks without Coltrane on a reissued Alice Coltrane album but never bothered to release the Coltrane tracks with the rest of that session. Quote
mikeweil Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 (edited) Universal has to make a deal with Ravi - he will not stall, that's for sure. But I think the main "problem" is that there is not a real "original" album to deal with. This would have to be an entirely new compilation. Could it be that Cuscuna is tired of dealing with Verve? Edited April 24, 2007 by mikeweil Quote
Kyo Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 They could just release it as an extended version of Cosmic Music. Quote
