Soul Stream Posted May 5, 2007 Report Posted May 5, 2007 I heard somewhere, but I don't know where, that Pharoah played with Patton. Can anyone confirm that? They did play together in the mid 80's at a place called Sparky J's in Newark (it was once the famous organ room The Key Club). The trio was John Patton, Pharaoh Sanders and George Brown on drums. Patton and Sanders were good friends in that they lived in the same building during this time and had a day to day relationship. Quote
AndrewHill Posted May 5, 2007 Report Posted May 5, 2007 Wow. Would've loved to hear one of those gigs. Quote
AndrewHill Posted May 5, 2007 Report Posted May 5, 2007 An interesting question could be: who would've been a more out-leaning sax player for Patton: Alexander or Sanders? Quote

Niko Posted May 5, 2007 Report Posted May 5, 2007 Was recently introduced to Big John Patton "Along came John" and love it. Any other Big John discs like this or other artist (minus Jimmy, Freddy Roch, Willette etc.) ? Cheers in advance bought Along Came John as my first Patton record today just for you (and me). It's really time to come back now, i'd say, being afraid of Nessa is part of the game! Quote

It starts with a pretty open theme and just wanders - a bit like the man himself !!! Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 i heard phaorah play inside once he opened up the set w/ giant steps, and it was like breakneck tempo and it sounded all weird Quote
Clunky Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 Thank's for starting this thread, I'm reconsidering my decision not to get the BJP Mosaic Select. I'd ruled it out because of complaints about the sound and because I thought I probably had enough Patton. So far what I have is.. Blue John Let it roll Along came.. Memphis.. Accent of the blues Boogaloo My favourite is Boogaloo. Does the select offer something different or more of the same? How bad really is the sound? Quote
Soulstation1 Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 EVERYONE needs a cd/lp of got a good thing goin' by bjp Quote

I don't hear that from the Select at all.... Considering what you have already the Select will really fill a lot of holes for you. The Way I Feel, Oh Baby, That Certain Feeling and Understanding. DUDE, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR. YOU'RE THE PERFECT CANDIDATE TO GET THE SELECT! You're really missing out on some GREAT music right now. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 I'll second that. There's nothing wrong with the sound on the Select. Damn great music! Quote

CJ Shearn Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 "Oh Baby" is a killer! One of my fav. Patton albums. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 The Select sounds great. I have no idea why there are complaints about bad sound. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 The Select sounds great. I have no idea why there are complaints about bad sound. Nor I. But I'm happy with almost anything (except a screwed up tape). Easy to please is best. MG Quote

Any other Big John discs like this or other artist (minus Jimmy, Freddy Roch, Willette etc.) ? Cheers in advance as we have a similar discussion going on elsewhere at the moment... it seems that nobody had noticed that The Jamestrane had also asked for other artists besides Patton that he might enjoy - that you really can't answer that easily with just the search function... You're right. JamesTrane hasn't been around since 21 April. Not my fault on this occasion, but, "guilty, m'lud". MG Quote

I would say definately Lou Donaldson's "The Natural Soul." You also might dig Patton's "The Way I Feel" and "Oh Baby"...both available on the Mosaic Select. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted January 12, 2008 Report Posted January 12, 2008 Another Patton album I really like is Memphis to New York Spirit with James "Blood" Ulmer on guitar. This also has some tasty George Coleman, particularly on McCoy Tyner's "Man from Tanganyika." Quote
