Guy Berger Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 A few years ago Sony issued a 2 cd version of Santana's 3rd album with a 1971 concert from the Fillmore West. I have the 1998 remaster -- is it worth upgrading for this concert? Guy Quote
BFrank Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 (edited) I think so. I had heard a few cuts from the "Last Days of the Fillmore" box set before I picked this up, so I had an idea what was coming. I think it's worth getting the entire show because it's Santana (version 1.1) at their creative peak. I would also recommend getting the 2CD version of the S/T first album. You get the entire Woodstock performance. Edited April 16, 2007 by BFrank Quote
jazzbo Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 I think both of those are really nice sets. . . . I'm glad I got the two cd versions of both. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 Yes, the deluxe edition of Santana III is really worth getting, if you like that album or are a fan of the first band. The live performance is very much worth hearing, and bears repeated listening. Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted April 17, 2007 Report Posted April 17, 2007 (edited) I would avoid it if you absolutely hate smoking hot salsa infused rock, and hearing (whenever you feel like it) perhaps one of the defining performances of the era/genre. I think it might rank very high in terms of how well it is recorded, too. You got to move it move it. Edited April 17, 2007 by AmirBagachelles Quote
Big Al Posted April 17, 2007 Report Posted April 17, 2007 Yes, get both deluxe editions. The respective live sets are well worth the extra bucks. Quote
BFrank Posted April 17, 2007 Report Posted April 17, 2007 I wonder why they haven't done this with Abraxas? Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 17, 2007 Report Posted April 17, 2007 "I would avoid it if you absolutely hate smoking hot salsa infused rock, and hearing (whenever you feel like it) perhaps one of the defining performances of the era/genre." that's EXACTLY why I'm avoiding it - Quote

It is different, and in some ways better, than anything in Santana's recorded output. I think that some people who do not generally like Santana would like that live performance on Santana III Deluxe. Quote
WD45 Posted April 17, 2007 Report Posted April 17, 2007 It is worth the price of admission based on the burning take on the live disc of "In a Silent Way." Awesome -- they should have played it longer... Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 17, 2007 Report Posted April 17, 2007 sorry, I shouldn't be so glib - I just find that Santanta's playing uses certain modal cliches but never really gets to the meat of it - Quote

[As on some other recordings, but it really feels like in on this live disc.] IMO. Quote
