With his salary, you'd have a difficult time fielding a great team around him, wouldn't you? Isn't that part of the problem in LA? I'd rather spread my salary $$ around for solid team players than for one overpriced superstar and a bunch of Smush Parkers.

Kobe makes $19.5M next year. Other guys in that salary range: Tim Duncan ($19M), Stephon Marbury ($20M), Jason Kidd ($19.7M), Kevin Garnett ($22M), Shaq ($20M), Jermaine O'Neal ($19.7M), Tracy McGrady ($19M), Allen Iverson ($20M). Two other players, Chris Webber and Michael Finley, are being paid about this much by their former teams (Philly and Dallas) due to buyouts.

I think it's definitely POSSIBLE to field a great team around him. However, the Lakers' front office has not made good decisions.

Like I've always said, it was not Kobe's decision to trade Shaq. From a Stephen A. Smith article quoting Kobe:

The Lakers' owner, Jerry Buss, "called a meeting with me after he spoke with Jim Gray [of ESPN] to talk with him about Shaq's future in the middle of the 2004 season," Bryant said yesterday.

"He met with me at the Four Seasons Hotel here across from Fashion Island, which is now the Island Hotel," Bryant said. "I went up to his penthouse suite. [buss] looks me dead in the face and says: 'Kobe, I am not going to re-sign Shaq. I am not about to pay him $30 million a year or $80 million over three years. No way in hell. I feel like he's getting older. His body is breaking down, and I don't want to pay that money to him when I can get value for him right now rather than wait. This is my decision. It's independent of you. My mind is made up. It doesn't matter to me what you do in free agency because I do not want to pay [shaq], period.' "

"Dr. Buss said that," Bryant said. "And I haven't said anything for years because I've always felt like folks were just looking to create controversy. Now I know. I realize what extent [the Lakers] will go to, to cover themselves."

And what does O'Neal think?

"I believe Kobe 100 percent," said O'Neal, reached yesterday while in Los Angeles on business. "Absolutely. There's no doubt in my mind Kobe is telling the truth. I believe him a thousand percent. I would have respected Dr. Buss more as a man if he would have told me that himself, because I know he said it. But he didn't [tell me]. He never said a damn word to me."

Interesting opinions about whether Kobe will actually get traded. I don't think he will, at least not this offseason. Relationship/situation would have to degenerate quite a bit more (see AI), because LAL will not get fair value. [Looking back, I think Philly did well enough in the AI trade.] Among those that say he will definitely get moved is Ric Bucher who was suggesting something like the following with Seattle: sign and trade Rashard Lewis plus the no. 2 pick overall for Kobe (plus maybe throw in some extra contracts). I find this highy implausible, and highway robbery by LAL, but then I'll confess to not being a big KB fan. How well would Kobe play with Ray Allen? Chicago is close to having all the pieces in place for a run, but I think Kobe makes more sense there (what would it take? Ben Gordon, a young bench player, and a pick? more?). Hinrich distributes and shoots from outside, Deng plays inside.

I think Detroit is going to win tonight.

My prediction: another awful, unwatchable game with both teams playing like crap.

So don't watch it. ...Maybe there's some Nascar on the Deuce tonight. Cavs/Pistons, while definitely not one for the ages, is gonna be a lot more watchable than Game 5 out west was. Thus far, the games have been exciting and close, if marred by some inconsistent officiating (both ways) and some challenged shooting (both teams). Not all-time classics, but definitely not awful or unwatchable. Maybe some small part of the outcomes in the East has to do with playing halfcourt (wish LeBron and co would run a bit more) and playing defense.

Damon Jones has a nice game.......

Like Steve Kerr needs to continue to write big checks to the Michael Jordan Foundation, Damon Jones needs to be sending $$$ to some Shaq-approved charities. I laughed when Doug Collins explained that Coach Brown put Jones in late in the game because he was another good ball-handler...

The two dunks LeBron had to close the 4th quarter=big time clutch.

Wow, Pistons get a whistle with under 5 seconds left.

LBJ shoulda driven to the basket with 6 seconds left in the first OT, instead of taking that shot that didn't hit anything.

And the Cavs shouldn't have wasted that timeout, might have been able to use it to set up a game winning shot there.

A great game, with an epic performance by LeBron. He was unbelievable.
