It is those kind of game-changing decisions that refs make that are so frustrating.

I agree, and it's getting worse... Duncan laughing, Jackson clapping, Baron doing basically nothing (for T#1 in that game where he clapped for #2); getting T'd up for lifting his shirt, etc etc etc. Hair-trigger mania.

The one image I can't get out of my head from last night is Nellie going way out on the floor to give Salvatore a piece of his mind. Nellie is so laid back lately it's not even funny. He's been so blase lately, some people have wondered if he even cares. He was even cracking jokes like crazy at the press conference after the loss... and yet the numbskulls in stripes were able to get him out on the floor screaming. Why is it so much easier to see what's going on from my couch than a ref who's only a matter of feet from the action?

Oh, and speaking of flops, Kirilenko should get an emmy for his job on Matt Barnes last night.

Nellie was a lot more hot-tempered in the late 80s -- he used to get ejected from games quite frequently.

Hey, if you had to sit on the bench watching Manute Bol shooting 3's, you'd get a little irritable too. ^_^

I remember being at the game in Oakland Arena against the Phoenix Suns where Tom Chambers scored 56 points. Nellie got tossed out of that one.

Brutal collapse by the Suns, they had this game in the bag and ran out of gas. Sure could have used Amare and Boris...

The one interesting thing is that the Suns played much better defense w/Amare not in the lineup.

I only managed to catch the final ten minutes, but it looked like Nash tried to do a bit too much in terms of shooting/scoring down the stretch. He looked exhausted, and was missing a lot of shots. He looked fantastic creating layups for others, though. Bell and Barbosa didn't get many looks when they really needed some offense (after Ginobli started lighting it up).

Great game. You gotta wonder if Phoenix will have enough gas to finish game 6.

Well, I just hope that after this series the Spurs get together and write a REALLY NICE thank you letter to David Stern.

I hear (and feel) what you're saying, but stars shouldn't (and didn't, in this case) get a free pass on breaking a league rule.

So why wasn't Duncan suspended?

So why wasn't Duncan suspended?

I posted the official NBA response to that question earlier in this thread:

[stu] Jackson brushed aside a suggestion that Tim Duncan violated the rule in the second quarter when he rushed onto the court after Francisco Elson dunked and landed on the shoulders of the Suns' James Jones.

"Both players got up," Jackson said. "There was no altercation, and they ran down to the other end of the court."

Since there wasn't an altercation, apparently it didn't matter whether Duncan got up or not.

For someone insisting on a strict interpretation of the rules, Stern spent a lot of time interpreting what "altercation" means.

The fact that the Suns were penalized for a sequence in which the worst offender was on the other team, plus the fact the dirtiest player in the series (Bowen) has been allowed to continue his "work" unimpeded throughout, makes the NBA's insistence on "law and order" laughable.

Clear as mud!

Just kidding, it makes sense. That doesn't mean it isn't a stupid rule.

Agreed - there should be some leeway for the circumstances. Use the intent that caused the rule to be put in place, not the "letter of the law". I think Stoudamire and Diaw shoulda been playing last night.

The NBA attempting to prevent fights and scrums is a good idea - especially when it comes to players going into the stands. But this situation wasn't remotely like that.

Horry's comments about the hard foul, earlier yesterday:

"If it would have been anybody but Steve Nash it probably wouldn't have been two games," Horry told reporters after the Spurs' shooting session. "But Steve Nash is a great player, MVP, focal point for the NBA now so they have to protect their players."

Horry downplayed the action.

"I was going to try and take a charge and then I thought . . . he's too fast," Horry said. "So I'm like, 'I'll just bump him a little bit,' and as you know, the great acting skill Steve has, when you hit the floor and flop, and he's like 'Oh, I'm dying over here.' ...

"It happens. I really wasn't trying to hurt him. I like Steve, he's a good person, but sometimes in the playoffs things are blown out of perspective."

Horry wasn't suspended 2 games because it was Nash -- he was suspended 2 games to "make up" for the idiotic suspension of Amare and Diaw. Which makes the whole thing even more idiotic.

Please no.

Agreed. I'd rather watch Pistons vs. Spurs for 3 years in a row before I could sit through a Lakers vs. Heat series.

I thought Horry got two because he also went after Raja Bell.

Obviously this is a purely counterfactual argument, but Horry would have been suspended one game max had it not been for Amare and Boris.
