undergroundagent Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 (edited) Anyone know anything about "The Source"? Year of release was 1970 with Ron Carter on bass. Funky vocal jazz? The cover looks greazzzyy! Edited August 31, 2003 by undergroundagent Quote
jazzbo Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 It's a Jimmy Scott record. It's NOT to my ears a funky greazy thing at all. It's Jimmy Scott, he's almost his own genre, he's one of the greatest singers who ever tackled a jazz repretoire. . . . I like this album, but I'm a Jimmy Scott fan. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 Well, thanks for bringing this thread to light. . . it made me revisit this session. This one is all about romance, late night ballads. . . . Slow and sexy music. . .some very nice string writing. . .some very nice Eric Gale. . .some nice sax from David Newman and one appearance by Yusef Lateef doing obligattos. . . . Beautiful music. T'aint FUNKY. Quote
JSngry Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 Great stuff! Lon, I did not know that "Joe Gentle" was Yusef Lateef! Learn something every day, eh? Those who dig THE SOURCE are STRONGLY encouraged to pick up LOST AND FOUND on Rhino. It's got 5 cuts from Scott's second, still unreleased in toto Atlantic session, and they are uniformly superb, at least every bit as good as THE SOURCE. The disc is filled out with five tunes from THE SOURCE, so ther is some duplication, but so what? It's more than worth it. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 Well of course he's really either Bill Evans or Yusef Lateef, Jim. BUT "Yusef" is a variant of "Joseph" and "Lateef" is "gentle". . . . I think that this is probably a very very apt name for this wonderful musician! Or for Jimmy Scott! Quote
brownie Posted September 1, 2003 Report Posted September 1, 2003 Interesting about Lateef/Gentle. But why would this musician who was under contract with Atlantic at the time of the recording (1969) use an alias to make a brief appearance on that Atlantic date? Quote
jazzbo Posted September 1, 2003 Report Posted September 1, 2003 I don't know. Not losing any sleep over it! Quote
