Alexander Hawkins Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 He's a Scot, but he now lives in NY, I think I'm right in saying. Depped for Harry Carney in Ellington's band, hence Marsalis fetishising him. A nice player, to be sure - I saw him play a stunning rendition of 'Single Petal...' from the Queen's Suite with Marsalis and the LCJO, which was by far the best thing on the programme that evening. I think he might have been mentioned on another thread, come to think of it... Quote
sidewinder Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 (edited) He's a Scot, but he now lives in NY, I think I'm right in saying. Yes, he's lived there for many years (at least since the 70s - or maybe the 60s). Came to prominence over here with Humphrey Lyttleton's band on baritone prior to heading to the US. Very fine 'mainstream' player - as mentioned he has been a constant in the New York Jazz Repertory Orchestra, Lincoln Center Orchestra etc. Also saw him featured with Wynton on 'Single Petal' on one of those Lincoln Center Orchestra tours. The Magnificent Goldberg Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 He made two wonderful albums with Junior Mance for Chiaroscuro, covering the music of Duke & Monk. Very nice sound. MG Quote
mikeweil Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 I first became aware of him on Benny Carter's 1989 MusicMasters CD "Over The Rainbow" with the All Star Sax Ensemble. He did extremely well in the very fast company of Carter, Herb Geller, Jimmy Heath, and Frank Wess! Quote

He did extremely well in the very fast company of Carter, Herb Geller, Jimmy Heath, and Frank Wess! I am a big fan of Joe Temperley and I have many of his albums. There are several fine sessions from him found on the Hep label, but one his best is a duo album with Dave McKenna on Concord, "Sunbeam and Thundercloud" ... highly recommended. He is one of the "gentle school" of bari players ... more Mulligan than Adams. Quote

Will look for that one, thanks for re recommendation! He is one of the "gentle school" of bari players ... more Mulligan than Adams. Yes, but he still has more bite than Mulligan! Quote

John Tapscott Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 (edited) On CD I have Concerto for Joe on Hep, Double Duke on Naxos, Sunbeam and Thundercloud on Concord, and as of today, a new one on Sackville - Joe Temperley & Harry Allen - Cocktails for Two (liking what I hear so far). I also have a Temperley Lp on Hep with Jimmy Knepper. Edited April 13, 2007 by John Tapscott Quote
