What sinks many of the Willis Jackson Prestige dates is the presence of Bill Jennings (or whatever his name was) on guitar. The guy plays the same pet licks over and over on every song.

Hmmm..I don't know about that, I've always enjoyed Jennings. He might not have a huge vocabulary...but he swings like mad.

There really should be a Roy DuNann Collection. The best engineer ever imo.

Agreed , you wonder what exactly, is was that he did that made those Contemporary dates sound so good.

Got Booker Ervin's Freedom Book yesterday - had forgotten that I already owned the OJC CD version. The RVG sounds a bit brighter and more transparent, and has a bonus track - one of four leftovers that had been collected on the Groovin' High LP. That makes me hope for expanded RVG versions of The Blues Book and The Space Book.

Awwwww, poor poor Wudy. True story: a friend of mine happened to be in the office of the jazz buyer of a Large NYC Record Store while a Concord rep was on the phone. He picked up a sealed promo of Full House & smashed it against the edge of his friend's desk. They both laffed. Then he scribbled a post it--

ask 'em WHY THE FUCK Willis Jackson Star Bag hasn't been on cd & if enough asswipes buy the same cds for the 4th-5th-6th time, then will they have enough $$$ to put it out?

The question was passed on with some interpolation of vernacular; the Concord rep pretended to take note-- we shall see.

Meanwhile-- hey, when's the Keepnews Koenig Series Koming? One "great" producer honors another, maybe Rudy can remaster Roy DuNann too, show us how that stuff shoulda sounded.

A pity the guy didn't also mention "Gatorade". I just put "Star bag" and "Gatorade" on one CD - brill combination.

Gator never tried to be the greatest jazz saxophonist ever - he KNEW that was Charlie Parker. When he and Bird went out on tour in the early 50s, they used to do a finale together and after playing a bit, Gator would just step back and let Bird play.

What Gator did - better than almost anyone else in my view (even McDuff) - was persuade the audience that they were in the right place at the right time listening to the right band and having a great time. It's music to lift your spirit after a hard day in the factory or whatever and to get you dancing and yelling your cares away. Yeah - working class music.

Finally got around to picking up the RVG Freedom Book. Whoa What beautiful music! Added bonus, the RVG sounds great, I can't believe how immediate and wide the sound is. And Richard Davis is so well-recorded. Rudy got everything right on this one...in '63 and then again in 2007

who care about those darnded RVGs and OKs, they ought to rather keep the OJCCDs in print and keep releasing new stuff...

and a various "complementary" compilation with tracks omitted from the Fantasy twofers would be cool, too...

yeah... too bad, the worst case scenario sort of has arrived, only with a little bit of a delay (due to the huge stock Fantasy seems to have had, I assume).

I still miss dozens of OJCs that I'd like to own... but then I bought so many in the past two years that I can't keep up with listening anyway, so it gets somewhat pointless to keep buying more and more... still, as it was before, you could just buy something new whenever you wanted, and the assumption (alas it was a wrong assumption) was that these discs, even the limited editions ones, would be around forever.

I'm not so pessimistic, as far as the availablity of the music is concerned.

The music business is changing quickly, with more and more downloads being offered. Very soon, lossless download options will be available. If Concord is offering these rarer OJCs as downloads (they are already available from Emusic), it will not remaster them but simply rip the old OJC CDs.

So in the end they could very well be around forever.
