JohnBlutarski Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 What say I? Well I started out thinking they would be great and that it was a good idea to re-do some of this stuff, but now I would have to agree with Claude, when I have upgraded a "favorite", I haven't found that much of a improvement in sound quality, not as much as on some of the Blue Notes. Also I think considering the amount of time people spend complaining about Blue Note's quality control, there hasn't been enough complaining about the quality control on this series or rather the lack of it. The "Saxophone Colossus" debacle and the European "Black Talk" and "Tenor Madness" missing liner notes,(but considering the "insights" some of the new liners provide this might not be a bad thing) and the not really that great selection of titles, I mean, what is the point of more Coltrane and Davis issues, both of them just had the same stuff re-issued in boxset form anyway. I think it's good that a few titles that were hard to find are coming out, but in gereral I would give the series a at the moment he, Cliff, what was the | The "Saxophone Colossus" debacle"? JB Quote
skeith Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 I have bought a few of these which I consider to be definite upgrades over the 20 bit K2s, however, one standout exception for me was Tenor Madness where I thought the RVG sound was rather harsh and I decided to keep the K2. Thanks, I was just wondering about whether to upgrade some of the K2s....Tenor Madness being one of them. sure, but of course, what sounds right to me may be different for you, so I am not suggesting you not get the RVG. jazzbo Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 I was quite happy with the K2s and was going to buy Quiet Kenny in that format, but found for $5 at a belly up sale. Sounds great to me, but has anyone heard both K2 and RVG on this one? Ooops forgot I used to have the K2 of this and then gave it away when the RVG was in hand. I really prefer the RVG. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 I doubt there will be a lot more Concord/RvG's coming since Rudy doesn't like the Concord people he has to deal with. Luckily he's fond of MC so that channel won't be closed. Hopefully, Rudy will continue to remaster these Prestige titles as they are certainly just as deserving as the Blue Notes are. Hey. . . I don't like a lot of the people I deal with. . . but. . . Quote

Deserving of what? His initials on the packaging? Guy No, the reintroduction in a new series, and the sound. (I dig the sound!) Quote
Soul Stream Posted April 10, 2007 Author Report Posted April 10, 2007 SS-- man, i didn't know that... ya'll gotta record! Rudy doesn't need our $$$ but I'd buy a side of you w/Derek & another w/Denny (whose real depths are NOT well-showcased by Dylan). Re: "Milkcow," I figured as much & tho' it's not impossible, it's pretty tuff to get anything doing the whole cross-country overdub. Believe it or not, it was Kerry who really impressed upon me Derek's greatness (also Mo' Greens Please)-- too bad more poeple outside Austin dunno! seriously, now or not-too-much-later, ya'll should lay some tunes down... live is OK too if you have a good soundman. edc Thanks Clem! Yeah, I'm pretty spoiled down here with great guitar players like Denny and Derek. Also, a guy I play with most of the time that nobody knows about, but really is the killer is Dave Biller. He's from the Barney Kessell/Charlie Parker school of burning and is a monster. Johnny Moeller is another guy who is phenomenal as well as the real unknown hero...Bill Cambell, who is about as bad and tasty a guitar player you'll ever hear if you could find him. Love to record someday, but.... Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 There's tons of Prestige stuff that I want to see out on CD for the first time, yet. I don't care who masters them. MG Quote
sal Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 Today over at AAJ there is a review for Booker Ervin's "The Freedom Book" (amazing recording by the way), and in the body of the article the reviewer mentions a new "remastered edition", and a picture shows an RVG of this title. I didn't know this one was part of the RVG series....does anyone know about this? Its not on Concord's current list of RVG remasters. A part of the next batch perhaps?? Quote

Soulstation1 Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 Anyone pick up the Full House [Keepnews Collection] CD? Quote
jazzbo Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 Yes, after I heard how great the Cannonball sounded, I picked this one up. Great sound. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 Awwwww, poor poor Wudy. True story: a friend of mine happened to be in the office of the jazz buyer of a Large NYC Record Store while a Concord rep was on the phone. He picked up a sealed promo of Full House & smashed it against the edge of his friend's desk. They both laffed. Then he scribbled a post it-- ask 'em WHY THE FUCK Willis Jackson Star Bag hasn't been on cd & if enough asswipes buy the same cds for the 4th-5th-6th time, then will they have enough $$$ to put it out? The question was passed on with some interpolation of vernacular; the Concord rep pretended to take note-- we shall see. Meanwhile-- hey, when's the Keepnews Koenig Series Koming? One "great" producer honors another, maybe Rudy can remaster Roy DuNann too, show us how that stuff shoulda sounded. this post was written in 24-bits & mastered using super-edc Personally, I would rather buy "Full House" 5 or 6 times than buy one Willis Jackson recording. Different strokes.... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 Personally, I would rather buy "Full House" 5 or 6 times than buy one Willis Jackson recording. Different strokes.... I read this while enjoying Willis's "Bar Wars". A favorite around here. I made an interesting (maybe only to me) discovery a few minutes ago. My listening was interrupted by a call for help with yard work and when I returned and heard the music I had forgotten what was on the player. For an instant I thought the radio was on and identified the players as Guy Lafitte and Wild Bill! They were playing "The Breeze and I" (alt) and within a couple of seconds I knew reality, but the connection was surprising. Now Peter is going to have to reconsider his Lafitte recordings. Quote

Ok, I have to admit it has been a long long time since I heard anything by Willis Jackson. I will have to go to Amazon and listen to some segments of his recordings to refresh my memory. Quote
RDK Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 There really should be a Roy DuNann Collection. The best engineer ever imo. Quote
paul secor Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 There really should be a Roy DuNann Collection. The best engineer ever imo. There won't be - at least not done by DuNann. According to an article in Stereophile a few years ago, he's lost much of his hearing. No snide comments about RVG, please. Quote
monkboughtlunch Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 What sinks many of the Willis Jackson Prestige dates is the presence of Bill Jennings (or whatever his name was) on guitar. The guy plays the same pet licks over and over on every song. Quote
