Head Man
I recently obtained a copy of the latest Johnny Hodges Complete Verve Groups set on Mosaic and I'm really enjoying the music on it. So much so that I'd like to be able to get the music that was available on the earlier vinyl boxset that Mosaic released. Can anyone help me by telling me where I can obtain copies of the same music on CD please. There seem to be quite few CDs available from Bluemoon & Classics but it's very difficult to try and work out which ones cover the earlier 'Small Group' period. Can anyone provide a definitive list? jazzbo
I think Blue Moon releases will get you most of the way there, if I am remembering correctly. Here's the Mosaic set's discography, that should come in handy. . . . Swinging Swede
I'll try. The earlier Mosaic LP set covered Hodges's 1951-55 Norgran material. The Blue Moon series for some reason only went to 1954. If you buy Volume 3, 4 & 5 of the Blue Moon series you get the complete 1951-54 Norgran sessions, but you will lack the two 1955 sessions. I'm not aware of a CD release of the 1955 sessions. Remaining to be released on Classics are the last 1954 tracks and the 1955 sessions. We feared that Classics had come to a definite halt, but this month a new batch will be released after almost a year's hiatus, so hopefully another Hodges CD (or possibly two) covering the 1954-55 material can be released soon. On Classics you should get 1950-1951 (only the last four tracks are Norgran material though), 1951-1952, 1952-1954 and the next one or two Hodges CDs Classics puts out. By the way, Lone Hill Jazz will come out with a Johnny Hodges/Wild Bill Davis "Project" which will include their 8 albums from the 60s. Those make up a chunk of what could be a possible future third Mosaic set of Hodges on Verve.
RDK
For what it's worth, I prefer the earlier Mosaic set over the later one.
mikeweil
You can check http://www.freshsoundrecords.com for availability - AFAIR not all titles are in print at the moment.

Chuck Nessa
I'm really disappointed they omitted the "big band" titles from the "Big Sound" lp. Some of my favorite Verve/Hodges.

Kevin Bresnahan
I'd love to get my hands on a reasonably-priced copy of the earlier Mosaic. The last few I tracked on eBay went for $250. The current set is in heavy rotation in my playing list. I just dig Hodges and Big Ben. They swing like there's no tomorrow.
jazzbo
Just wait for the Lone Definitive Jazz Hill Gambit Factory version. Won't be long.
Kevin Bresnahan
Just wait for the Lone Definitive Jazz Hill Gambit Factory version. Won't be long. I just can't. I don't want to give those guys any of my money. I may go the Classics route if that comes to fruition. For some reason, Classics CDs don't feel like they were made by crooks. Maybe it's because they never break the 50 year rule?
