EKE BBB Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 Do you know the line-up for the Dexter Gordon DVD? On July 30, 1964, the Dexter Gordon Quartet (with Tete Montoliu, NHOP and Alex Riel) was playing at the Molde Jazz Festival in Norway (there is a private recording of that gig). Could this be the same group? Gotta check Thorbjørn Sjøgren's discography of Dexter Gordon! Quote
EKE BBB Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 Just checked my notes: On July 28, 1964, the Dexter Gordon Quartet (Tete, NHOP, Riel) played at the TV building on Copenhagen (where they have been playing together at least from early June). This concert was broadcast on the Danish TV. So this itinerary doesn't seem reasonable at all: -July 28 --> Copenhagen (Denmark) -July 29 --> (Holland) -as stated in the information from Jazz Icons DVDs- -July 30 --> Molde (Norway) But it isn't impossible either. Claude Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 (edited) Wow, that's amazing. At least the Wes and Mingus circulated before, but if the sound and picture qualtiy is as stellar as on the first Jazz Icons series, it will be a huge improvement over the bootlegs (most of which seem to have been taped from TV re-broadcasts in the 80's or 90's) Edited April 4, 2007 by Claude Quote

Dan Gould Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 Can't say that I'm not a little disappointed that Dex's group doesn't feature Kenny Drew, but its great news that the first series was a big enough seller for the second series to become a reality. Can't wait to see what other gems they'll have along with these. Quote
bertrand Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 (edited) Making space on my DVD shelf for the Mingus... On the topic of this series, Mike Fitzgerald told me he thinks there is a technical problem on the Quincy Jones (don't have it, and now I hesitate to get it). He says the sound is screwed up on the second concert (the pitch is off) and it does not seem to be the way it was recorded, but something in the remastering. If enough people can confirm this, I will pass the info along to Don Sickler who is involved in the series. Bertrand. Edited April 4, 2007 by bertrand Quote

Oops -- I reviewed the first series and didn't catch that glitch on the Quincy, though I did say that the second concert wasn't up to the level of the first. I guess it wasn't literally (assuming i.e. that the pitch is off on the flat side). Quote

I guess it wasn't literally (assuming i.e. that the pitch is off on the flat side). I didn't notice any specific technical problem either, but my attention faded after the first concert, which is a captivating theatrical video clip. The second part is just a regular concert caught by TV cameras, with inferior sound and picture quality. Quote
etherbored Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 i own the wes date on a japanese dvd. it is * happening * ! Quote
funkogre Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 He says the sound is screwed up on the second concert (the pitch is off) and it does not seem to be the way it was recorded, but something in the remastering. I have the Quincy and I don't think the second show being of lesser quality than the first had anything to do with the remastering job. Seemed like the tape just aged poorly to me. I think they mentioned something in the notes about that also. I'd check but I don't have it in front of me. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 The sound on the second concert is definitely inferior - seems a little more '2 dimensional' to me compared with the more expansive studio dynamics on the first Belgian concert. Great DVD ! Quote
medjuck Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 BTW The first releases are now available at my local Costco! Quote
John Tapscott Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 i own the wes date on a japanese dvd. it is * happening * ! Who are the sidemen on this date? I will probably get 'em all. I bought all of the first series (except the Baker which was out-of-stock) at the post Christimas Best Buy sale. My personal favs are the Monk and the Blakey (Lee Morgan is really in top from on this date. Actually seeing him in action has made me appreciate his artistry even more). Quote

Trumpet Guy Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 The Chet Baker in this series is off pitch as well. The 64' part is a whole step too high/fast. I emailed them--said there was nothing they could do. True? Quote

Claude Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 June 18 , 2007- it's official, the lineup for Jazz Icons series 2 is: • John Coltrane • Live in ’60, ’61 & ’65 (3 shows- Germany 1960, Germany 1961, Belgium 1965) 95 minutes • Dave Brubeck • Live in ’64 & ’66 (2 shows- Belgium 1964, Germany 1966) 67 minutes • Duke Ellington • Live in ’58 (1 show- Holland) 78 minutes • Sarah Vaughan • Live in ’58 & ’64 (3 shows- Sweden 1958, Holland 1958, Sweden 1964) 65 minutes • Dexter Gordon • Live in ’63 & ’64 (3 shows- Holland 1964, Switzerland 1963, Belgium 1964) 70 minutes • Wes Montgomery • Live in ’65 (3 shows- Holland, Belgium, England) 78 minutes • Charles Mingus • Live in ’64 (2 shows- Norway, Belgium) 90 minutes All seven titles will also be available in a boxed set with an exclusive bonus disc, not sold separately, of unreleased performances by John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Sarah Vaughan, Dexter Gordon and a 1970 interview with Dizzy Gillespie. This series is incredible, folks. We are so anxious for you to see this stuff. We believe it's every bit as strong as the first series and maybe even stronger. We'll let you decide. More updates are coming. Check back and spread the word! http://www.jazzicons.com/news.html I'm happy that the Coltrane shows will be finally available in good picture and sound quality. So far, I have only seen the german shows on tapes that were apparently transfered from PAL to NTSC and back. Quote
bertrand Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 (edited) Another thread seemed to suggest that 'I Want More' would only be on a bonus DVD which you get if you buy the box. This seems to suggest that it will be on the Gordon DVD itself. So, in a nutshell: Is the DG DVD complete, or are they leaving out a track on purpose to entice completists to buy the box? If it's option 2, I would be extremely annoyed. How about the Coltrane? Bertrand. Edited June 19, 2007 by bertrand Quote
bertrand Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 The website confirms option 2. I'll have to burn the bonus DVD off someone Quote
