Aggie87 Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 I have (and like) their last, "Who is This America?" If you have that, is this comparable, or better? I also used to listen to a bit of Fela and also King Sunny Ade....need to find my old recordings. Quote
J Larsen Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 King Sunny Ade is a new name to me. I take it he is/was similar to Fela? Quote

I have and like that one too, and to me, this one is a pretty big step forward. That's just me though. But it's definitely as good by anybody's standards, I'd think. Quote
JSngry Posted April 3, 2007 Author Report Posted April 3, 2007 King Sunny Ade is a new name to me. I take it he is/was similar to Fela? Well, they're both African... But they're only "generally" similar Ade's a lot more..."sunny". Quote
Aggie87 Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 (edited) King Sunny Ade is a new name to me. I take it he is/was similar to Fela? They're both Nigerian... Sunny Ade is a major name in juju music, whereas Fela was an afrobeat guy. I'm not gonna be one to define the styles, but they're both good at what they do. Sunny Ade was never as political as Fela though. Wikipedia Entry edit - one of my former colleagues is Nigerian, about 50 yrs old, and loves Sunny Ade. He respected Fela, but Ade was music that the "people" listened to, when he was living back home. Edited April 3, 2007 by Aggie87 Quote

Jim, Just curious what made you grab this new release? Seems like a) people are already ga-ga over Antibalas, or b) following McEntire's name, or c) varying combinations of a) and b). I guess I am c), though I've never been close to ga-ga over Antibalas. I like them, but again, my favorite recording of them is as a horn section on the MMW album. Have you heard this? Eddie Bobe, congas, bata, shekere, bottle and bell DJ Olive, turntables Antibalas horns: Aaron Johnson, trombone, Jordan McLean, trumpet and flugelhorn, Michael Herbst, baritone saxaphone and bass clarinet, Stuart D. Bogie, tenor sax and contra alto clarinet, Todd Simon, trumpet and flugelhorn Col. Bruce Hampton, vocals Danny Blume, guitar, baritone guitar, ambient guitar Brad Roberts, vocals Scotty Hard, Nomad Rhythm Maker, rhythm guitar, turntables and feedback Produced and Engineered By Scotty Hard I *thought* they sounded good on that Mark Ronson/Banksy thing too, but if held to the same standards the you probably hold horn sections to, its a bit of a mess. Yes, I have that MMW thing, and agree that it's just dandy. What made me grab the new one? Simple - I had gotten the last one based on hearing it thru a friend, liked it, and wanted to hear the new one. Heard it thru a friend as well before I got the order in, but it's all good now. "More of the same" more or less would have been ok with me (for at least this "one more" album), but I was quite pleasantly surprised with how much "more" this new one was. Quote
ep1str0phy Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 Late to the party, but they were just playing this in my (very) local shop. It's good. Very good. Good on y'all for picking up on this one. I'm a little strapped, but I picked up a copy of Who Is This America? on reasonable discount. Will spin. Quote
ejp626 Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 Maybe already mentioned but emusic has Who is this America and they have just added Security. I already had dl'ed one and will probably dl Security this month (long story but I forfeited last month's dls because of moving and getting swtiched to a lousy internet service and am still a bit steamed over it). Soul Stream Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 (edited) Not to be a beotch, but if you think Antibalas is good, check out The Budos Band. Another Daptone congregation doing the Afrobeat thing a little better in my opinion. Live they actually gave the Dapkings a run for their money at SXSW a few weeks ago (although half the dapkings were in the budos band "filling in"). Don't know if their record lives up to the live show, but if you're into this sort of thing in, check them out. Like a member of the Sugarman 3 said about Budos...."A bunch of Staten Island dudes doing Fela.... I thought it would suck.... but they actually kick ass." Edited April 4, 2007 by Soul Stream Quote

That's funny, go across the Verrazanno bridge from Staten Island to Brooklyn and you are in the home borough of Antibalas! If you get the chance to see Antibalas, DO IT!!! I saw them as the opener to Soulive at a free show in Brooklyn in 2005 and they were excellent, political and danceable. When they performed'Indictment' from 'Who is this America' it was cool to hear a large crowd yell "Indictment" as each name was read off. Quote
Adam Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 I very much like Antibalas, and will check out The Budos Band as well; haven't heard of them before. Quote
