David Ayers Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 I used to have it but I lost it, and it went the way of the BNBB. Anyone? Pretty please? Quote
Claude Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 Do you read japanese, David? Impulse Top 50 list from Google cache Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 (edited) You can also use HMV Japan's search box; select "by cat.no.", type "UCCI9" and GO Unfortunately, deleted items such as John Coltrane's Ballads (UCCI-9001) and A Love Supreme (UCCI-9002) are no longer listed. David Ayers Posted August 29, 2003 Author Report Posted August 29, 2003 Er... well my Japanese is non-existent, but thanks anyway Claude. Hans - actually I thought of this one, but as you say the OOP titles don't show. We had this list on the BNBB and no-one worried about keeping anything in those days... Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 David, I have asked Hiroshi Tanno if he can help. I'll let you know. Quote
David Ayers Posted August 29, 2003 Author Report Posted August 29, 2003 Thanks Hans! I suspect that the original list came from him in the first place. Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 I suspect that the original list came from him in the first place. It probably lurks in his archive somewhere. Wish I could take a peek... Quote

Leeway Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 Can anyone speak to the sound quality of these reissues? How good is the remastering? Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 Can anyone speak to the sound quality of these reissues? How good is the remastering? Great. Very clear and transparent, yet a bit more aggressive than the earlier, also great but mellower Japanese 20-bit K2 remastered Victor Impulse! reissues. Quote

jazzbo Posted August 30, 2003 Report Posted August 30, 2003 I have a handful of these and LOVE them. I think they are among the very best of the cd reissues that I have sound wise and packaging wise. I like the earlier K2 Impulses, but these just sing with a real naturalness on my system. I got quite a few from Rd Trumpet at unbelievable prices, and there continues to be some available there for sale. . . . Quote

Very clear and transparent, yet a bit more aggressive than the earlier, also great but mellower Japanese 20-bit K2 remastered Victor Impulse! reissues. I have a couple of the Victor K2's (MVCJ series). I think these sound wonderful, and mellow, yes. A Love Supreme is almost TOO mellow at times, when compared to my original experience with the recording! Quote
davef Posted August 30, 2003 Report Posted August 30, 2003 Does anyone have the Shirley Scott reissues? I've got older copies of Latin Shadows (1998) and On a Clear Day (1991) and may want to upgrade at some time if worth it, especially Latin Shadows... love that record! Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 30, 2003 Report Posted August 30, 2003 (edited) Does anyone have the Shirley Scott reissues? I've got older copies of Latin Shadows (1998) and On a Clear Day (1991) and may want to upgrade at some time if worth it, especially Latin Shadows... love that record! I haven't heard the Scott CDs, but I'm convinced the 24-bit remastered Japanese mini-LP sleeve reissues (many CDs in this series have fold-out sleeves) sound much, much better than their U.S. counterparts. Red Trumpet has them, but they're pretty expensive. They're also listed on the HMV Japan site: Latin Shadows and On a Clear Day, so they're still available. Why don't you ask Hiroshi Tanno if he can supply them: hiroshi@earlyrecords.com - his prices are slightly higher than HMV's (2345 yen or approximately $20, plus shipping), but his shipping rates are much lower.
