Peter Friedman Posted September 13, 2019 Report Posted September 13, 2019 Two nice CDs with Paul Quinichette Quote
mikeweil Posted June 20, 2021 Author Report Posted June 20, 2021 I'm on a Quinichette kick lately. Of the three Basie tributes he recorded in the late Fifties, this one seems the best to me: Great recorded sound by Tom Nola, much better than the two for Prestige Van Gelder engineered. Lots of dynamics. Nola catches the punch of the four trumpets so well. Jo Jones' drums sounds great here, too. Quote

It was a Mighty Quinn release when they had it. It may or may not be gone? mosaic web site is "revamped", but before spending JBucks, I'd at least call and see if they answer. If they do, see if that got any lying around collecting dust or whatever their stuff does. It's a really good record! Quote

Larry Kart Posted August 16, 2021 Report Posted August 16, 2021 The Quinichette to get above all IMO is "For Basie," with Shad Collins, Nat Pierce, Freddie Green, Walter Page, and Jo Jones. This was Page's last recording, I believe, and he makes all the difference. Shad Collins shines too. 9 minutes ago, Larry Kart said: Quote
Late Posted October 23, 2022 Report Posted October 23, 2022 Quinichette came to play for this date. Though one of his keys keeps clicking (I'm guessing D?), he is undeterred. Love the way Quinichette bends a note. Quote
Late Posted October 23, 2022 Report Posted October 23, 2022 This album was my first exposure to Shad Collins. Very tasty trumpet player. I listened to the album on YouTube recently, went to look for the OJC...and realized I don't own it. Quote

mikeweil Posted October 24, 2022 Author Report Posted October 24, 2022 According to the Lord disco August 14, 1952 is correct. Quote

On this CD, they assigned almost all writing credits to "(R Ellen) Molique Music BMI" and gave themselves copyright of all of the music with ℗ Mainstream Records. Clearly these things are not true. mikeweil Posted October 24, 2022 Author Report Posted October 24, 2022 These tracks originally were recorded for Dale or Sittin' In With. Maybe Bob Shad was involved. I have a disco on these in the basement. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 24, 2022 Report Posted October 24, 2022 Some of those tracks e.g ‘Diaper Pin’ are also on the 2LP Helen Merrill ‘Mixes’ set which Bob Shad put out on Mainstream. Not sure on the credits on that one. Quote
JSngry Posted October 24, 2022 Report Posted October 24, 2022 Bob Shad was directly involved with the original recordings, and Mainstream was a legit label. The Sittin' In With label material was reissued several time on Mainstream LP, although not to this extent. I have it as: but it had a previous life as: Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted October 24, 2022 Report Posted October 24, 2022 So Mainstream was legit but on this CD, they were simply lazy about getting the song credits right? Quote
