Son-of-a-Weizen
Saw this Japanese only release over at eBay last week. It's not the same one put out by Collectibles.......sooooo, what's it all about?? Must be pretty good if it sold for $76....then again, maybe not? A bootleg? brownie
Looks like a Warwick label logo on the top right side of the cover! Must be a variation on this Warwick album: That was with Herbie Hancock, Laymon Jackson and Jimmy Cobb. The session has been reissued in numerous variations. The version you posted made use of Herbie Hancock's popularity several years after the session was recorded. Not worth $
Claude
Here are the tracklists and session info of the two different "Jammin'" releases, and Donyld Byrd's "Out of this world". It looks like the Collectables is in fact "Out of this world" (or alternate takes from the session), but the other "Jammin'" is a different 1961 session. Collectables: 1. Currio's (Alternate Take) 2. Bird House (Alternate Take) 3. Mr. Lucky (Alternate Take) 4. Out Of This World (Alternate Take) 5. Daydreams (Alternate Take) 6. jazzbo
I'm pretty sure that "Jammin' with Herbie" and these other tracks are retitled alternates. I have a European cd release called "Jammin' with Herbie" and that is the case. Edited March 25, 2007 by jazzbo
mikeweil
The takes on Jammin' are truncated - the only issue that had the takes as complete as possible was the two LPs on Fresh Sound - one had the Warwick LP as issued, the other the alternates. That Jammin' is a bootleg to be avoided. Due to most themes edited off it is an unpleasant listening experience. Teddy Charles produced the session and played on one track: Date: ca. 1961 Location: NY Label: Warwick Pepper Adams (ldr), Donald Byrd (t), Pepper Adams (bar), Teddy Charles (vib), Herbie Hancock (p), Laymon Jackson (b), Jimmy Cobb (d)a. 61WA71 It's A Beautiful Evening - 5:20 (Dorothy Wayne, Raymond Rasch, Sidney Keith Russell) West Wind (Ger.) CD: 2135 - Out of This World Fresh Sound (Sp.) CD: FSR-CD 137 - Out of This World - Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams Quintet Fresh Sound (Sp.) CD: FSR-CD 335 - Out of This World - The Complete Warwick Sessions Starburst CD: 1010 - Touchstone Fresh Sound (Sp.) LP 12": FSR-638 - Out of This World - Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams Quintet Warwick LP 12": W 2041 - Out of This World - Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams Quintet TCB (Swi.) LP 12": 1002 - Takin' Care of Business The rest of this album features the Pepper Adams-Donald Byrd Quintet. Charles only appears on one track. The CD reissue contains the extended versions of each track. On the Warwick and Fresh Sound LPs, Charles is referred to as "Jinx Jingles." From Noal Cohen's Teddy Charles Discography. I remember mailing him the timings of both Fresh Sound LPs and descriptions of the solo routines of each track to help him find out if Charles was on more tracks. I repeat: Avoid that Jammin' in every form! You're better off with any of the Fresh Sound issues! Edited March 26, 2007 by mikeweil
Son-of-a-Weizen
Not worth $76 No, definitely not $76........but I'd easily pay triple the $4.98 asking price for the variation of it over at 'Oldies'. As for that one in the picture I posted...sounds like it gets a unanimous

Rather, that cut is a very spirited and terrific version of "I'm an Old Cowhand". Edited March 26, 2007 by MartyJazz
