garthsj Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 In case you missed this video, here is an indication of why Paul Desmond is still so revered by his fans. This is a wonderful solo, and Desmond knows it ... just catch that smile at the end of his solo as he adjusts his mouthpiece ... God! I miss Paul Desmond ... This may take some time to load, but it is well worth waiting for ... http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1ispq_th...hings-roma-1959 Quote
brownie Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 Outstanding Nothing 'foolish' about this! Quote
Late Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 That is a great solo. It's always interesting to hear a solo, and then see it performed. Hearing this particular solo, I would imagine a focused, and somewhat subdued, Desmond. Instead, he shows a fair amount of movement and facial gestures. One thing that struck me as unusual — Desmond fingers his keys in between phrases much like some trumpet players do on their valves while they're coming up with their next idea. Quote
catesta Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 Real nice, thanks for posting it. I think I'll go have myself a dry martini. Quote
JSngry Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Highlight - the ending pan of the audience applauding. There's this one chick who is just sitting there, not impressed. Her husband/boyfriend turns to her & says something to which she responds by suddenly flashing one of those sincerely insincere smiles that only a truly great woman can muster so thoroughly & effortlessly. The dude's probably thinking that she's been loving every second of it. A scenario no doubt repeated later in the evening... Quote
DTMX Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 That reminds me - I still haven't gotten around to reading my copy of Take Five: The Public and Private Lives of Paul Desmond. Curse the distractions of the internet. Quote
