Epithet Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 And, of course, the Everest album (forget the conductor) with the photo of the guy holding the topless maiden in the air, presumably to be sacrificed. Oh, you swine. Quote
Spontooneous Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 Yes, there were several Rites on 78 sets. There's a composer-conducted version with a lousy French orchestra from about 1929; a version conducted by Pierre Monteux (who gave the premiere) with a slightly less lousy French orchestra, also made about 1929; Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra (as heard in "Fantasia") from the 1930s; and a 1940s remake with the composer conducting the New York Philharmonic. That remake is really, REALLY good. Those are the 78 recordings that come to mind. There are probably others. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 It should be noted that the "Fantasia" version is radically reworked. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 The Everest is nice indeed: That IS a nice design, but there was another on Everest, too, featuring a photo of a topless woman about to be sacrificed. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 that everest one is balls- i want that one- the stowalksi sets, i want those too- those are hard to find Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 That's the one I meant. I said it was on Everest but I meant London. Quote
Quincy Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Not just Rite of Spring...22 discs of Stravinsky conducting Stravinsky (CBS) is being (re)released on November 13. Amazon price is $31.49. Customer review link. I linked it to the customer review page as one of the reviews does a better job of listing the contents than Amazon's entry. CD Universe says it's 1 CD with 427 cuts. Sounds like there's next to nothing in terms of notes, but certainly a nice "price per lb." Quote
7/4 Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Cool! I like that price. I need need need need this... Quote
Bol Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 The recent recordings by Rattle and Salonen (I've listened to them because I wanted a version on SACD) didn't convince me either. Not that they are bad, but I always prefer the Boulez, with it's perfect balance of precision and wildness. I myself think one cannot go wrong with the recent Salonen on DG. Boulez sounds tame and safe in comparison. Quote
MartyJazz Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 On CD, I like the Telarc recording featuring Lorin Maazel and the Cleveland Orchestra Quote

Joe G Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 (edited) No mention of Ernest Ansermet w/ L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande... where would this fall on the spectrum? Edit: no mention other than Mike's posting of the original cover that is! Edited November 6, 2007 by Joe G Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 ok ok i just have to comment, you know how the common jazz musican 101 dogma has been like how jazz musicans really dig on stravinsky, which i think stemmed from bird liking him, etc....anyways you know how the common dictum is like jazz cats are "hip" to stravinsky when it comes to classical? well chewy's here to tell you that thats all f'ing bullshit. all these cats who tell me: stravinskys can be jazzy. they are so full of it. Tchaikovsky's melodies have twice as much to do with jazz than stravinskys. tchaikovsky is better, i dont care what you guys say Quote
Free For All Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 (edited) Chewy! Where ya been? I like Stavinsky because he's good, not because it's "hip" to like him. And I don't interpret his music as "jazz", it's just Stravinsky being Stravinsky. I've played his "Ebony Concerto" and (like many of his works) while it does undeniably contain elements of jazz, it's not jazz, it's Stravinsky, and that in and of itself is pretty interesting to my ears. He swings hard in the way that only he can. Tchaikovsky swings hard, too. common jazz musican 101 dogma Never took that class, it was an elective. MartyJazz Posted November 8, 2007 Report Posted November 8, 2007 Check out Max Bruch's Violin Concerto for a classical piece that really "cooks". The version I recommend is the 1962 RCA Victor Red Seal recording of Heifetz with Sir Malcolm Sargent and the New Symphony Orchestra of London. Absolutely thrilling! Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 10, 2007 Report Posted November 10, 2007 STRAVINSKY'S MUSIC IS NOT IDEAL UNLESS IT IS UTILIZED IN CONJUNCTION WITH BALLET CHOREGRAPHY Quote
raynmari Posted November 11, 2007 Report Posted November 11, 2007 I am trying to find a version of Stravinsky's Rite Of Spring to start with. Does anyone have any to recommendation? I love the Charles Dutoit, Montreal Orchestra recording, but it is rare. If not the Chicago Sym Orch with Ozawa is on itunes and it nice Quote

DMP Posted November 12, 2007 Report Posted November 12, 2007 From the Ashley Kahn "Impulse" book, Alice and john Coltrane are trying to decide what to listen to one afternoon, after a few suggestions John says "Something greater, something vast, something with multiple, higher dimensions." Alice replies "OK, what would that be?" John says "Stravinsky." Quote
