kh1958 Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 just heard don pullen (organ) with david murray in 1991. pullen on organ recommendations? I think this has been discussed before but, there are: The two David Murrays--Shakill's Warrior and Shakill II, on DIW. There's a single (great) track of organ on Pullen's Milano Strut (Black Saint). Jack Walrath's Serious Hang. Two LPs on Mainstream by Charles Williams (I haven't seen these have on CD). Quote

kh1958 Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Milano Strut (versions on Shakill's Warrior) and the Black Saint record (a duet with Don Moye). Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 (edited) My favorite organ one-off is Pullen's work on "My Brothers" from Kip Hanrahan's 'Conjure: Cab Calloway Stands in for the Moon'. tried to search for the lyrics but alas i'll have to rely on my own... "you come up here shit on my floor, spill my liquor, talk loud, giggle about my books, move things from their natural places...." edit: just found the album on iTunes (aaargh sez alocis') and eMusic for immediate gratification ... you might just add "Bitter Choklate" as well. The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 He plays some nice organ on Maceo Parker's "Roots revisited". MG Quote
Eloe Omoe Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 (edited) My favorite organ one-off is Pullen's work on "My Brothers" from Kip Hanrahan's 'Conjure: Cab Calloway Stands in for the Moon'. Which, by the way, is the same tune played by John Scofield, Pullen (on organ) and Marvin Smitty Smith under the title "Charlie Chan" in Scofield's DVD "Live 3 Ways" (Blue Note). luca Edited March 21, 2007 by Eloe Omoe Quote

clifford_thornton Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 You know, in my time with Pullen, it has been entirely as a pianist - say, with Giuseppi, Nommo or Mingus' Changes. I'll have to check some of these recommendations. Quote
BFrank Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 Big fan of the Shakill's albums. The first is a little stronger than "II", but both are certainly worth tracking down. Quote
