alocispepraluger102 Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 any comments or opinions on the jazzology label? Quote
jazzbo Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 I like the George H. Buck labels in general, and admire what he's done to keep the jazz legacy in print and alive. On Jazzology I have mainly historic releases (by which I guess I mean sessions recorded before the seventies) and really enjoy them almost to a "man." Sound reissues of lps, usually with additional material, and with great sound. Quote

jazzbo Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 (edited) Gosh, well not knowing your personal favorites, I'd say that my favorites are the Eddie Condon Town Hall Concerts, the Art Hodes releases and the This is Jazz releases. I don't think there are any with Butterfield as a leader on that label. . . . . Edited March 20, 2007 by jazzbo Quote

jazzbo Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Well, the Wellstood will hit your account with less impact. The Vol. 12 is outstanding! Quote

king ubu Posted February 4, 2012 Report Posted February 4, 2012 Bumping this up... got the two World's Greatest Jazz Concert discs recently (two different concerts recorded in 1947). Of course the title of the discs is pure hyperbole, but there's some fine music on both. What else would you expect with all those involved: Wild Bill Davison, Muggsy Spanier, George Brunies, Albert Nicholas, Joe Sullivan, Art Hodes, Pops Foster, Baby Dodds, Bertha "Chippie" Hill, Hot Lips Page, Danny Barker a.o. (#1), and Muggsy Spanier, Johnny Windhurst, Sidney Bechet, Bob Wilber, Jack Teagarden, George Brunies, Dick Wellstood, Baby Dodds a.o. (#2). But gee, what happens on "Basin Street Blues"? Teagarden is leading off, and Johnny Windhurst is trying to find his place more or less successfully (and contributing a good solo later), but the rhythm section... what the hell are they doing? (It's Hank Duncan-p, Cyrus St. Clair-tuba and Ed Phife-d) - they seem ride on a different train/beat or be in another, non-adjacent room! Quote
jazztrain Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 The Butterfield/Wellstood is very nice as well. I believe it's a reissue of an LP that was on the 77 label. Well, the Wellstood will hit your account with less impact. The Vol. 12 is outstanding! Quote
