Gave it 2 spins so far and I really like it. Although I enjoyed the first album, I think the quartet tracks show what a potent combination Pat and Brad are, and that Brad is another great pianist behind Pat. He almost takes the Lyle Mays aesthetic further, especially on tunes like "The Sound of Water", and how he incorporates the main melodic frame in his solos is cool. I am really fond of "Fear and Trembling" which at the freeish pulse its taken at it almost reminds me of a Miles 2nd Quintet piece. Pat also takes some of his best guitar synth solos in recent years on "Towards the Light" (I hope he does this with the PMG at some point) and Brad's "Secret Beach" which is a slow bossa. The riff, which is almost like the one from "(Its Just) Talk", is a nice set up for Pat. "En La Tierra Que No Olvida" has a great tango groove from Jeff Ballard, wow he's really becoming a drummer I like a lot, especially from this disc and Kurt Rosenwinkel's "Deep Song".

Definitely prefer the Quartet stuff. Even on the last record I was quite bored by much of the duet stuff. This record is much better, even though Metheny breaks out the synth and the effects a bit too much for my tastes.

If you think you might dig this record at all, you will.

Wasn't blown away upon first listen and really wasn't expecting to be. I obviously need to give this one a few more spins. The synth guitar ain't working though- and this coming from someone who really likes Offramp.

their show from Saturday night is on dime. Give that a d/l and listen. It totally changes the perspective from the album, burning stuff live. I dunno, I don't understand people's aversions to Pat's GR300 guitar synth personally I love the sound of it. When he solos on that thing he really cooks, and things always soar to crazy heights in those tunes. Calling Mr. Gloss!!! :D

I'm downloading it now and I'll listen to it later.

Since I haven't heard it I'll just say that if Pat's gonna use a synth, he might want to move on to a second synth patch. It's been - what...25 years since Offramp?

I've put this album on a couple of times while doing the dishes. I like that they have tried to push the harmony in some different ways; it's not as predictable as you might think. I don't have a problem with the synth tone, personally. So far no tune has grabbed me like the quartet tunes on the previous release did, but I have yet to give it a close listening.

The other new CD I got the same day as this one is Kenny Werner's Naked in the Cosmos. I'm a bit more excited about that one at the moment. Some cool stuff there!

I really enjoy the Werner side. There is some very creative ensemble writing, great playing and the recording sounds very good IMHO. How'd you happen on to that one Joe? I just ordered his latest ("Lawn Chair Society") w/Scott Colley, Brain Blade, Dave Douglas and Chris Potter. I think it's about time for Kenny to have a thread. He's a great player (and thinker).

Sorry, off topic. I do plan to get the M/M ASAP. I really liked the first one. :)

really Joe, "A Night Away", "The Sound of Water", "Towards the Light" "Don't Wait" "Secret Beach" or "En La Tierra Que No Olvida" haven't grabbed you? All those tunes really grabbed me. I know "Say the Brother's Name" you liked on the first record b/c its one of your favorite tunes :-) Totally unrelated thought but for the hard modes in the Guitar Hero series of games for PS2, XBox 360, etc... they should put a Metheny tune in, hehe
