chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 it was so bizzare: it was this drum battle, linoel hampton, gene krupa, and CHICO, and they are all soloing and stuff, then this giant curtian falls down and there a big band in back of them-- it completely blew my mind then i saw this clip of bobby cooper, hampton hawes, ray brown and shelly manne live at the manne hole--- it was probably the greatest west coast jazz ive ever seen on video Quote

brownie Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 hey chewy, enjoy that one too! The Gerald Wilson orchestra (not in Europe, as it says) with Joe Maini and Teddy Edwards soloing. Buddy Collette in the sax section too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD8aRXkXJTs Quote

Buddy Collette in the sax section too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD8aRXkXJTs That was from one of the 'Frankly Jazz' half-hour shows recorded in LA. Jack Nimitz on baritone. Some idiot seems to have labelled Gerald on trumpet as Freddie Hill on this copy. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted March 12, 2007 Author Report Posted March 12, 2007 ok i read the article, and have some questions: WHY IS THE LIB. OF CONGRESS SO DISORGANIZED? why do we always hear about people finding, discovering stuff in the l.o.c. archives-- is every item not on a catelogue or file? they just found this 16 in transcription disc just lyin in a shitpile like at ones favorite antique or record thrift store? JSngry Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 I'm wondering if that's the arrangement that Geral did for Duke in its original form and the one that Duke recorded had been edited for the band by Duke or somebody else, or if Gerald took the arrangement he did for Duke & rewrote it for his band. mmilovan Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Oh, this was almost simultaniously, and I believe in telepathy And you know what clip excited me the most (not counting the above mentioned - these are beyond any categhory) - Jo Stafford: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bE1lCcSnVqY She is so refined and band (that I know nothing about) really swings like mad!!! Holy shit! I'm not a huge Jo Stafford fan, but GOOD GOD is that a great cut! Call me crazy, but is that possibly Gil Evans leading the band? Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 That sure sounds like it could be a Gil chart! But I don't recall ever hearing about him working for Jo Stafford, and the way the announcer brings her in makes it sould like it's her show. Who's that announcer? That voice sounds real familiar. And what's most interestnig, this live take sounds way better than parallel studio version! Gil Evans or not, it was very, very nice band, with such groove... Edited March 12, 2007 by mmilovan Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Don't know the studio arrangement, is it the same as this one? Quote
mmilovan Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 (edited) It think it's different: http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/wma-pop-up/...3728355-7748752 And here is picture of Gil around that time, God knows if he is or isn't on that clip... it can be... Edited March 12, 2007 by mmilovan Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 And here is picture of Gil around that time, God knows if he is or isn't on that clip... Now here's where things get a little ambiguous. That looks like a picture of Gil from the mid-50s, and I'm thinking that clip might be from a little earlier than that. Gil was already into middle age then either way, so a few years could make a difference. Probably not him, but now I want to know who it is anyway... Maybe it's Jack Parnell... Quote
brownie Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Call me crazy, but is that possibly Gil Evans leading the band? You crazy Gil Evans, no way! May I suggest Nelson Riddle? Now you can call me crazy! Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Not Riddle. Doesn't look like him at all. Almost looks like Gil. Almost... Quote

JSngry Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Ok... http://www.tv.com/ford-startime/the-swingi...55/summary.html 1960 is the year. Wow, everybody & everything looks older than that. But ok. Still no clue who the bandleader is, but oh well. Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 More... ...a recreation of radios "Jo Stafford Show" with JO STAFFORD, KEN CARPENTER, RED INGLE & HIS NATURAL SEVEN according to http://www.ejazzlines.com/Featuring-Stan-K...THE-p46805.html Quote
mmilovan Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 (edited) So, those clips are form 1960's? It looks like they are recorded in some radio studio room, rather then television studio. Now that band IS a mistery band, really... I can not connect that person who directed to that band to anybody (thin moustache looks strange) - certainly it's not her's husband Paul Weston: http://www.johnnymercer.com/memory/pw.jpg It's not Jack Fina, to whom is song connected with: http://www.collectable-americana.com/image...81/JACKFINA.jpg It's not Freedie Martin suggested by this link: http://www.ejazzlines.com/Featuring-Stan-K...THE-p46805.html because he looks different: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...oorCanteen3.jpg This clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvYIiFcPfv4 taken from April 9, 1958 TV show, shows Jo looks simmilary to Jo captured on "Gentlemen Is A Dope"... Larry Kart Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 A little voice in my head (got to get that taken care of) tells me that the conductor might be Frank Comstock (Hi-Los, R. Clooney TV show, etc.), though I can't find a Comstock photo. No way that's a Gil Evans chart. Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 No way that's a Gil Evans chart. From 1960, I agree. From 1950 or so, like I thought it might have been, I don't know. The shout chorus has that "loud Thornhill" sound in the voicings. Gil was still doing some commercial arranging back then, so it seemed plauable to me. But it is 1960, so it's a moot point. Quote
