The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Still wise, but a very slightly flawed wiseom it is. Ah well, my view of the world is that no one has as many cups of tea a day as I do. MG Quote
T.D. Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 Sorry for OT inquiry (this seems like the best candidate of existing threads), but does anyone have an opinion on Johnny Griffin's Argo release JG, with Ware and Mance? I just saw a (new release?) mid-price CD, and am considering it. I so far have only two Blue Notes, A Blowing Session (which I dig), and The Congregation (which didn't do much for me, despite my Sonny Clark obsession), and had been planning to try some Riversides next. JG is really nice, i can connect more strongly to it than to The Congregation which (slightly) underwhelmed me as well; i think of the Riversides i have, i like Kerry Dancers and especially Grab this (with organ) better than JG, and the one with French Horn, whose name just escapes me about the same as JG (although it is very different) Quote

Is it a US or European issue? MG Quote
T.D. Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 Must be a US release, because I saw it in a local brick-and-mortar shop for $10. Looks to be a Verve slimline digipak. There's a CD Universe page, which I won't give because I don't know how to link it with Organissimo... Quote
jazzbo Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 Yes, US release, very short. . . very sweet. http://www.vervemusicgroup.com/product.asp...t&pid=10981 Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 Thanks - the sooner Jim gets his links to the retailers back, the better. There are now 4 CDs I want fairly urgently... MG Quote
sidewinder Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 Just been watching Griff in action on that Clarke/Boland Big Band in Prague DVD. A commanding force in that band (what a sax lineup - to die for) and very much at his peak in Oct 1967. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 Personally, before getting J.G., I would suggest picking up these 3 Riverside CDs. The Little Giant (with Blue Mitchell, Julian Priester, Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, Tootie Heath) Johnny Griffin Sextet (with Donald Byrd, Pepper Adams, Kenny Drew, Wilbur Ware, Philly Joe Jones) Way Out (with Kenny Drew, Wilbur Ware, Philly Joe Jones) Quote
T.D. Posted July 21, 2007 Report Posted July 21, 2007 Thanks for the help! I'm going to hold off on JG, and pick up some Riversides down the line. Car maintenance has dug into the current CD budget, as well. Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 how is "gemini"? i guess no one cares for it? no i mean "pisces"...g_d i am an idiot. Quote
Niko Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 how is "gemini"? i guess no one cares for it? no i mean "pisces"...g_d i am an idiot. pisces: iirc it's a sequence of quartets with only one tenor playing on each track and it is mostly ballads (and on the 4 Lockjaw quartets Horace Parlan plays celeste) so it is a little odd concept, but some of the tracks are really nice (the title track with Griffin for instance) Quote

BruceH Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 I've got Battle Stations, The Tenor Scene, and Tough Tenor Favorites. Love 'em all, but I'd have to say my fave is Tough Tenor Favorites. Great sound to that. Sounds like I should get Minton's. Quote
BruceH Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Pardon me if I missed it, but any comments on the Griffin/Davis album Pisces? Quote

Shawn Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Pisces is a nice change of pace date, but you should hunt down all the other ones first. I'm glad I have it, but it's my least favorite of the Griff/Lock albums. Quote
