Hello all,

just wondering if someone of you knows what extra material there is to include in the forthcoming 2 cd set of the Complete Metheny/Mehldau sessions.

It's not actually a 2 CD set. Perhaps you are just refering to some repackaging of the previous Metheny/Mehldau + the new Metheny/Mehldau Quartet?

Amazon lists it for 29.99, so I think it will be a 2 CD set, but I have yet to see a track list. Release date is the 13th, so I guess we'll know soon enough.

Edit: or, maybe not. CD Universe says one disc, and a release date of the 20th, but still has no track info.

What is it then? What's the difference between these three releases?

They releaed Metheny/Mehldau last year (mainly duos, plus a couple of quartet tracks)

They release Metheny/Mehldau Quartet next week (mainly quartet, plus a few duos)

In the spirit of repackage, repackage, repackage, they release something that combines the above in one package latter in the month.

Well, assume that is the case, otherwise there will be a lot of angry people who bought the individual releases.

I bought Metheny Mehldau Quartet individually, which should come soon. From what I hear, the "Complete" set will have something containing links to future downloads from their tour coming up.

It's a 2 CD set for sure (Amazon and CDUniverse are wrong about that). My info said it has bonus material too. Let's wait until the tracklisting is available. I doubt it will be released in March. May is more likely.

I can't see them screwing with their fans like that. But we shall see.

Of course if they make FLAC files available via the web, as Frisell has done recently, that's cool.

I don't have a link or anything, but I read an interview with Metheny where he confirmed they'd be releasing (don't know when) the first two Metheny-Mehldau discs in a single package. The interviewer wondered about the wisdom of it: since it's known, wouldn't people just not buy the first two and wait for the double? Metheny said that was short-term thinking--CDs in his catalogue might not sell huge amounts at one time but keep selling year after year. As far as he's concerned, people who bought the first one can just buy the second one, and vice-versa, whereas for years to come, those who haven't bought either will be able to choose to buy them one by one or both together.

That's perfectly fine thinking, as long as no "bonus" material shows up on the Complete set.

If that happens, I will be annoyed that I purchased the two individual titles.

I echo these sentiments , record companies have done that trick and after that they wonder why people prefer downloading stuff instead of buying cds

I should add that it wouldn't bother me as much if the "complete" package had bonus tracks, but came out 5-10 yrs down the line. Then it would be my choice whether to upgrade to get the additional material or not.

But if they *are* adding material to the complete set now, when the 2 individual discs are still very fresh, well that's just an attempt to fleece the market, IMO.

They seem to re-release a number of pop titles with additional material (the McCartney Memory Almost Full comes to mind right now) these days, only a couple of months after the initial release. I think that's pretty sorry.

I don't have TOO much of a problem with it, as long as the bonus material is available for individual purchase through iTunes. What really pisses me off is when they make you buy the whole album just to get the extras!

Here's another example:

Black Sabbath - 'The Dio Years' (2 CD Tour Ed.)

"The legendary band's thundering ‘Best Of’, featuring Ronnie James Dio as front man, featuring three newly recorded tracks. Will now be available as a Limited Tour Edition with a second disc with four rare live cuts from the legendary Hammersmith Odeon show recorded in December 1981"

The original Dio Years set came out just 6 months ago (I don't have it, nor do I plan to get it). But what incentive is there to purchase a new release, if you suspect it will come out a few months later with "more"?
