Alexander Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 I thought the woman who sang "Midnight Train to Georgia" was quite good. Quote

Could be, but they could also be due to the weight gain and a push-up bra. I thought that's what Ryan Seacrest might have been referring to but I didn't think he was that subtle or clever with his humor. Edited March 3, 2007 by mikelz777 Quote

jazzbo Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 Yup. Both reason to go and to stay away. Quote
patricia Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 (edited) Last year on Canada's clone of the show, "Canadian Idol" a young jazz-singer Theresa Sokyrka, was one of the two finalists. She was very good and I have her CD, "These Old Charms", which also contains three of her own compositions, along with her interpretations of songs usually identified with Billie Holiday and others, including Diana Kraal's "Come Away With Me". She was refreshing and did not attempt to mimic any of the more famous singers identified with any of the tracks. Her stage presence was not as glamourous as a professional jazz singer who might perform in a club. Perhaps somebody should have groomed her. She was obviously thrilled to finally have a huge audience and gracious to the young kid who did win. He [i forget his name] sang in a more familiar to the audience pop style and was also was very talented. He was a really cute young kid, with curley blonde hair and a winning personality. His voice was strong and he had a real connection with the material and with the audience. In this case, exceptional talent did win and the audience did not reject Sokyrka because she sang jazz, but because the winner had a better connection with the audience. Their talent was almost impossible to rate one ahead of the other. The personality and presentation aspects won out. Edited March 7, 2007 by patricia Quote
Shrdlu Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 I don't often watch, but I just saw them throw out a guy who then sang "Fever" as a farewell. He was great, and the accompaniment was real groovy. What a waste! Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 I don't know if he's had a big block of supporters who probably won't give up on him soon, but it looks to me that the Indian kid is on his way out, or should be. If he makes it to the top 12, its obvious he's the new Kevin Covais/John Stevens who the teen age girls won't ever desert. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Have to agree with you, I've been a supporter because he reminds me of an old friend, but he's not delivering the goods! Quote

Then again, I don't even like this song when Peggy Lee sings it so I carry a negative bias. Quote

With a little more experience and training, he might be a pretty decent singer but he seems to lack any passion or zest when performing. Sundance blew again and should probably go. The pretty boy who sang Stevie Wonder does nothing for me and should go. The guy who sang the Rare Earth song should be in peril as well. That bald guy (Phil?) kind of creeps me out. He certainly doesn't have an idol look. Overall, the guys were, and are, unimpressive. I still like Chris Sligh. The women are being short-changed having to keep even numbers between the girls and guys. Edited March 7, 2007 by mikelz777 Quote

I didn't mean that I thought that he was the greatest singer ever, but he was pretty good. Ya ever hear JOS and Kenny Burrell play that tune? The CD has a great outtake as well; when they did the master, the melody wasn't even played. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 17, 2007 Report Posted March 17, 2007 I'm flipping through the dial and came across "American Idol Rewind" which is the first season, sold to the syndication market (I can only imagine that its cleared in 100% of the country). And I just have to say, looking back ... Ryan Starr was a helluva babe Kelly Clarkson looked a helluva lot more like the girl next door than she does now At that point in time, Paula must have still been on the good side of 40, because between now and then, she went from still kinda OK to big time "I'm fighting and LOSING the battle with age". Quote
jazzbo Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 I agree with you Dan. . . Ryan Starr is a babe! So glad that Brandon left. . .though really I thought Shanjaya would be gone by now. I'm rooting for Jordin Sparks. I like her, think she's beautiful, and why bother to root for Lakeesha or Mellinda. . . they don't need my help! Quote
RDK Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 Heh. Rewind is playing in the background as I'm browsing the forum. Ryan just sang and now Christina Christian is on. Now she's one hella babe I gotta say. Probably the most beautiful contestant ever. And she can sing! Quote
