Dan Gould
Good stories, Al, and I agree there's a risk that the Devil Rays won't cooperaate - but we've had a pretty good time with them so far this year and most of last year. As for Harry, there was only one thing I couldn't stand during his broadcasts: Every ball hit in the air was called a "drive". Dying quail into the second baseman's glove: "here's a drive going to be caught by Sandberg." High fly to CF: it's a "drive". used to "drive" me nuts. Big Al
Or when a guy would swing and miss, Harry, anticipating a solid smack of a hit, would say "HEEEEE had a cut..." Edited July 23, 2007 by Big Al

Patrick
Tremendous return for Jon Lester tonight. Beautiful, cool night in Cleveland. Westbrook serves up 4 runs in the top of the first. Tribe helped out by hacking freely when Lester was walking guys, but Lester got out of his major jam in the 4th and cruised. Sox fans have to smile at that. Even Timlin continued his recent effective run. ...Great story, though I have to admit a disturbingly large showing of red sox nation at the Jake. We're everywhere, Patrick - and with Lester making his return, you had to expect an even larger crowd. I agree it was a great sight, even though Lester continued to show the same pattern of inconsistent command. I also don't understand what happened to his fastball. Before he was called up last year, it was usually around 95. When he got to the majors, it was in the low 90s. After the cancer diagnosis, people assumed that was the cause, and he was supposed to go back to where he was. Supposedly at the beginning of his rehab starts, his velocity did improve, but where is it now? Even if his command is iffy, he'd get more swings and misses if his fastball was 95, because it improves the differential between that and his offspeed pitches. Much to everyone's surprise, Timlin has pitched extremely effectively since his return from the DL in June. Including a couple of bad appearances back then, his ERA is still under 2 since that date. He's gradually working his way back into Tito's good graces. Timlin, Delcarmen, Okajima and Papelbon, with Lopez for the occasional lefty, make for an extraordinary bullpen, especially when you consider that none of the starters are six inning Yankee types, it gives plenty of options to keep people fresh. Oh, and one other thing - its great when you win four in a row in a streak that started with Ortiz coming out of the game and still not returning yet. Patrick
We're everywhere, Patrick - and with Lester making his return, you had to expect an even larger crowd. Perhaps, but for a number of years there, you weren't at the Jake. In fact it was Tribe fans appearing in large numbers in Detroit, Chicago, Baltimore etc. Oh those were the days. Remember when Thome and Manny were the 7 and 8 hitters in the lineup, and Julian Tavarez was a lights out 8th inning guy? More than a decade ago now... Yeah, and since then its the Sox that are working toward setting the record for home sellouts that the Indians set back in those years. Of course, how many of Nation members in attendance were of the "pink hat" variety, no one knows.

Dan Gould
What a pitching performance at the Jake from both starters! Dice goes to 12-7, Sabathia misses the chance to win his 14th and that gives Beckett the chance to be the first to reach that level tomorrow in another marque match up against Carmona. Hopefully Papi's return will give Fausto flashbacks to last year and the bats will come alive. Yanks keep pounding out the runs but this five game win streak and the things that have gone along with it give me a good feeling that we're ready to take off again. zen archer
Boston media guys were just discussing on FSN that Boras is influencing Dice K's pitch count ?( first i have heard of this)..he only threw 99 pitches and i thought he could of came out for the 8th. They were saying that Theo and Boras are too buddy buddy and this could lead to the Teixeira deal. Jacoby for Teixeira thats the rumour. Only followed parts of it on the computer but it looks like CC and Dice were both dealin'. Hopefully tomorrow's pitching will be as impressive (...maybe with a few more Tribe extra base hits ). Carmona can't qualify for ROY, but maybe most improved player (if they do that in mlb)? I think it is safe to say that BSox are out of whatever midseason funk they were in, ...even if Tribe wins the next two. And you gotta like not giving up ground when BOS plays Tribe while NYY plays KC.
Big Al
They were saying that Theo and Boras are too buddy buddy and this could lead to the Teixeira deal. Jacoby for Teixeira thats the rumour. Whatever gets that toad outta Texas and into someone else's dugout is alright with me. Let him become someone else's headache. And don't anyone tell me about his stats, I know what his stats are. The problem is those stats mean nothing when he consistently strikes out with men on base; or how his home runs usually come when the game is out of reach; or how the Rangers went on a helluva hot streak while he was on the DL. The guy's a cancer in the clubhouse, and the sooner he's gone the better.

They were saying that Theo and Boras are too buddy buddy and this could lead to the Teixeira deal. Jacoby for Teixeira thats the rumour. The idea that Boras is influencing pitch counts is ludicrous. The fact is that Dice is adjusting to the four man rotation and has thrown a lot of pitches already. They said they would lighten his load to try to keep him fresh for the pennant drive and October. And with seven innings in the books and Oki well rested, it was the obvious move. Plus, a 1-0 game means absolutely no mistakes, and since Dice has given up a few blasts and Oki went from Opening Day to last week without giving up a single homer, he was the better choice for the situation, in my opinion. As for Teixeira, I can't see them making big changes on such a successful team, especially when the odd man out has played so well all year (Lowell). And to give up their best position prospect when he is knocking on the door is crazy when you are getting someone who is guaranteed to go to free agency in two years. You can absolutely bet the Yankees will go very hard for him when all he will cost is money. Even if you think you can convince him that Boston is a great place in the next year and a half, there's no way he doesn't test the market. The only trade I make for Teixeira has Lester as the centerpiece, and a lesser prospect thrown in. I'll always root for Lester but I am not entirely convinced he won't be a guy who doesn't harness his talent and put it all together. Dan Gould
We didn't even lose Piniero - he cleared waivers (no one was going to put in a claim and be on the hook for the remainder of his 4+ million salary) and accepted an assignment to Pawtucket, where he starts tonight. I guess there were no hard feelings, and he'd rather have a chance to pitch his way back than see what is out there when he's given his release. Just because they weren't getting anyone to make a deal for him doesn't mean that teams like the Phils or Atlanta wouldn't have been interested in him as a starter. Oh, and Papi returns tonight. Dan Gould
Well a mother-bleeping 1-0 game SUCKS when you're on the wrong side of the score. And with a runner thrown out at the plate and two caught stealing in one inning??? (*&(^^&^(*^&(^&* Of Beckett's four losses, two were run defeats in which he gave up 1 or 2 runs. Gabbard better keep his streak going tomorrow, but I really have to wonder how much longer the Indian's bats can be kept quiet. It will probably be a slugfest tomorrow. Patrick
Think back to the previous night, and be glad that your team won that one. Carmona and Beckett are now 13-4. Has there been better back to back pitching matchups this season? Dice K, CC, Fausto, and Beckett were all tough, and not against weak lineups. And maybe a little more respect for Victor Martinez' (improved) arm. Nice to see the home crowd gave him a standing ovation when Boston ran themselves out of the top of the 8th. Gabbard has an excellent chance of winning because he is facing the brutal Cliff Lee who will not be able to keep Bosox bats silent. Book it. But remember a split in Cleveland is actually a reasonably good outcome for Boston. Insisting on anything more is being a bit greedy/unrealistic. Too bad it looks like Detroit and NYY will win tonight (at least at the time I'm typing this).

Quincy
Ugh, another 1 run loss for the M's vs. the Rangers. Big Al, you're killing me! And darn the luck, the Angels finally win and move up 3 1/2. What a season for divisional races! All are worth watching, why even the AL East is becoming semi-interesting.
