Very sad news.

I still have fond memories of seeing him perform solo at the drum center in the 1990s. I brought a friend that is a classical violinist and she was so thankful for being exposed to Leroy.

Yes, me, too. He opened playing solo for the World Saxophone Quartet about the time of WSQ's Black Saint album "Steppin'" in Erikson Kiva at Michigan State University. Revolutionary thing to hear. Who knew music could sound like that?

When I had a radio station in college, I called it "Revolutionary Ensembles" for obvious reasons.

I had the pleasure of seeing him solo and with other groups a number of times, all excellent gigs. But perhaps the most interesting was running into him on the street in NY when I was younger. I said "Leroy Jenkins?" He was sort of surprised and was like "um, yes?" and I proceeded to follow him on his errands and talk about the music, and he graciously didn't shoe me away. It was really something for me at that time, and still is.

Rest in peace, Leroy. You will be missed.

What a damn shame. He was a unique and moving musician. I saw him a couple of times back in the day, solo and with the Revolutionary Ensemble. I bought "Swift Are The Winds of Life," his duo with Rashied Ali, from a table at Ali's Alley. RIP, Leroy Jenkins.
