Niko Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 Since yesterday 2001 has updated the homepage and (essentially besides a (larger) bunch of Telarc Stuff, Oscar Peterson ... McCoy Tyner, whatever) they have the Hatology Releases I have listed below... any thoughts what I have to get if i want to spend, say, 24,95 Euros and each costs 4,99? At the moment I am thinking about the Ortegas, Ellery Eskelin, one Koglmann and... but there are enough names that don't tell me anything such as Guillermo Gregorio or Lauren Newton and people about which I hardly know anything such as Jörgensmann... Help Wanted! Eskelin, Ellery VANISHING POINT Gregorio Trio, Guillermo RED CUBE(d). king ubu Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 Wow, cool! Don't miss Ortega's "New Dance"! "Scattered Clouds" is fine, too. Also the Jon Lloyd is great! The Joe Maneri would open the way into a total new territory (micro-tonal music, he's got several discs out on ECM, too, and Mat Maneri is his son and deeply involved, too, although his own hats are not that terrific, mostly, rather just ok stuff, though I do like "So What" and the duo with Matt Shipp, whcih is OOP I think). king ubu Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 here's the order I put in: 1 IN 505599 Eskelin, Ellery VANISHING POINT 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 501521 Jörgensmann Quartet, Theo SNIJBLOEMEN 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 505595 Koglmann, Franz L'HEURE BLEUE 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 505594 Law Quartet, John ABACUS 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 505600 McPhee Po Music, Joe OLEO 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 505597 Nagl Ensemble, Max RAMASURI 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 505592 Shipp String Trio, Matthew EXPANSION, power, release. I have most of the other things I am interested in... Of Nagl I've got "Flamingos" and like it, and I also heard a live broadcast of the Ramasuri project, so this should be good. Shipp is someone I'm not sure about - his ThirstyEar stuff I'm not really interested it (the Spooky thing was so boring!), but some of his hats are quite ok. Law has a good review in Penguin, I think? All or most of the items available are NOT part of the mid-prize thing, by the way! But then, it's all together a rather mediocre offering, not containing many great items (except the Lloyd and mainly the first of the Ortegas). Quote
Niko Posted February 22, 2007 Author Report Posted February 22, 2007 But then, it's all together a rather mediocre offering, not containing many great items (except the Lloyd and mainly the first of the Ortegas). I think some items they already had last year, Grossman and Mehta/Lovens for example, I am pretty sure I saw in their rest bins last summer... but I might mix something up thank you for the hints! would have overlooked Lloyd otherwise! Swinger Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 Saw this listing today. I'm mostly interested in OLEO and that Myra Melford cd.Are they good? Quote
king ubu Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 The Lloyd has been chosen by two members I think in the "1 album 1 artist" thread. I don't know much of his music (just one more on Leo) so I couldn't vote for any of his albums. Just definitely don't miss "New Dance" - here's another highly individual alto that you shall enjoy, even more so since you're into Sonny Simmons (not that they're too similar, but similarly unique, rather...) The Mehta/Lovens is boring, I think. Only had an earful of it at a store, and Penguin gives it 2 or 1.5 stars only... from my impressions that's about correct. Quote
king ubu Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 The Melford is ok in my memory, but it's been quite some time since I have played it. I have the old jewel case edition, but I think that's one where no new remastering was done for the digipack hatOLOGY version. "Six Little Pieces for Quintet", btw, is pretty nice. Old-fashined free jazz, some may think that's boring, but with Johannson in charge and fine sidemen such as the great Axel Doerner, it's pretty good, I think. I have a friend who cherishes the Doerner/Neumann/Johansson Barcelona thingie very very much. I got it in a previous sale but haven't had a chance to play it yet... Quote
sal Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 Saw this listing today. I'm mostly interested in OLEO and that Myra Melford cd.Are they good? The Melford CD didn't do much for me, and I'm a fan. Quote

The Melford CD didn't do much for me, and I'm a fan. Ok. I do have her "Alive In The House Of Saints 2cd-set " which I got from zwei...a while ago and I love it! Maybe I should try it anyway with that Oleo. Quote
jlhoots Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 FWIW I like Snijbloemen, the Melford & the Ortegas. Quote

jon abbey Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 that Trapist is very strong, most of Hat's forays into Vienna EAI I don't like too much, but that one's a winner. Quote
Late Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 The Eskelin, I think, is excellent — but it's not typical of Eskelin (which is perhaps why I like it). It's very atmospheric, and not with much "soloing" per se. The ensemble as a whole puts together a lot of moody music. I actually think Miles Davis would have liked this disc for its "painterly" qualities. Just don't expect blistering solo spots or hummable melodies. I think a fair number of the others can be easily left out of a shopping cart. Snijbloemen is a fine date, though. I'd get that one (if I didn't already have it). Quote
Niko Posted March 6, 2007 Author Report Posted March 6, 2007 finally made it to 2001 this weekend and got the two Ortegas, Koglmanns L'Heure Bleue, Snijbloemen, Eskelin, and Jon Lloyd have spent some time with most of them and like them a lot, almost regret i didn't try Maneri as i like the microtonal string section on the Eskelin a lot (but i had heard some Maneri on the radio ten years ago and didn't like it at all); L'Heure Bleue even has - besides all sorts of nice properties such as Tony Coe - a Tony Fruscella composition, Baite, on it (which, it seems, he didn't record - google suggests that it crossed the Atlantic with Brew moore), the Ortegas, i didn't get another Ortega record in a sale last year and it has haunted me ever since - still these, and especially New Dance which i am just hearing, are much better than i expected... (Snijbloemen and Lloyd i didn't really hear yet) Thank you so much guys! Quote
