Late Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 This Japanese import is available again ... for the budget price of 1000¥! I've never heard the original 1987 domestic pressing, but I think the current edition might have the same remastering. At any rate, the disc sounds good and the music sounds ... timeless. If you don't already have this disc, I'd strongly recommend it. Superlative Pres. I ordered my copy from Hiroshi, but CDUniverse has it for $12.09 right here. 16 tracks total. A lot of alternates, which I'm usually not crazy about, but in this case they're indispensable. Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 Great music! And good to know that it's available again...still a shame that Mosaic wasn't ever able to get that Complete Keynote CD set off the ground. Quote

I wouldn't be surprised if this reissue was 24-bit remastered by Universal, like most, if not all of their reissues in recent years. Edited February 15, 2007 by J.A.W. Quote
Late Posted February 15, 2007 Author Report Posted February 15, 2007 There's actually no indication that I can see in the notes whether or not it's a 24-bit remaster. Even if it's "only" 16-bit, it doesn't matter of course. It was properly done to my ears — the surface noise is left in for the most part (there's not much), and this lets all the ranges (esp. the high range) come in with warmth. This edition (UCCU 9276) was reissued in late '06. What I wonder is — why didn't the Japanese market re-release any of the other Keynote sessions? (I'm going on memory, but I think this was the only one.) It would be great to see the Coleman Hawkins, Lennie Tristano, and Roy Eldridge Keynote Sessions reemerge — especially because I don't have any of them! Quote
jazzbo Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 Fantastic music! I've had this music on vinyl and in several different cd versions, and kept the Masters of Jazz cd version (and the Keynote vinyl box version). Just doesn't get better than this. . . Pres. . .longtime favorite sessions. Quote

Late Posted February 16, 2007 Author Report Posted February 16, 2007 Agreed. I was about to purchase the 1987 edition used (for quite a bit more) when I discovered that this one was back out on the market. Even for those who don't order from Hiroshi, that CDUniverse price is very fair. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 (edited) Great cd. But I have an original 78. The cd/lp transfer robs the original of it's bass. The cd sounds good enough to make it the preferred medium but sometimes I play an original for the folks. Edit to say I meant I have a number of the original 78s. The reduced bass is most noticable in the date by the Kansas City Seven. Do not let this comment deter you from the current cd. It is dandy. Edited February 17, 2007 by Chuck Nessa Quote
JSngry Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 Is there anything on the CD that wasn't on the Trip LP from back when? Quote
brownie Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 (edited) The Japanese CD 'The Complete Lester Young' had previously unissued alternates of 'Sometimes I'm Happy', 'After Theater Jump' and 'Six Cats and a Prince'. Edited February 16, 2007 by brownie Quote
John L Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 (edited) Yes, there are alternates on this CD that were not on the Trip album, including a fine version of Sometimes I'm Happy. That Trip album (Pres at His Very Best) was a trip for me at a time when I was just getting into Pres. Back in the day, I played the grooves of that album stone bald. mikefok Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 It's highly recommended as I have already got an earlier version of JP print. Quote
BruceH Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 I also have this on vinyl and a couple CD versions. One of the crown jewels of recorded jazz. And yes, you will want all the alternates. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 I still love that well known quote by Brew Moore. This may not be the exact wording, but it's close enough. "Anyone who does not play like Pres is wrong." Quote
mjzee Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 I bought this CD in mp3 format, and it's missing discographical info. I know who plays on the dates, but can anyone tell me which takes were the masters and which were alternates? Just You Just Me (2 takes) I Never Knew (2 takes) Afternoon Of A Basie-ite (2 takes) Sometimes I'm Happy (2 takes) After Theatre Jump (2 takes) Six Cats And A Prince (3 takes) Destination K.C. (2 takes) Quote
