randyhersom Posted July 10, 2009 Author Report Posted July 10, 2009 With the appearance of Chronological Classics mp3s on Amazon and eMusic I'm figuring out a strategy to get most of the Mary Lou that has been issued on that label. I already own The Asch Recordings (great) and will be trying not to overlap. There are 7 Mary Lou volumes on CC: 1927-1940, 1944, 1944-1945, 1945-1947, 1949-1951, 1951-1953 and 1953-1954. Emusic has 3-6, Amazon has 1 and 3-6. #2 has been spotted only on Half.com for 192.70, hope it's all on the Asch set. I do own one volume on CD, can't remember which at the moment, I'll look that up when I get home. Quote

WD45 Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 I have stated elsewhere on this board in other threads that my single favorite piece of music EVER may well be Mary Lou's take on "It Ain't Necessarily So" from Black Christ of the Andes. I have listened to this cut more than any other cut in my collection. There is a depth there, an economy, and an intensity that hits me every time. Listen to it here, if you haven't [or if you have]: on Rhapsody I also love Nitelife and the Free Spirits date. Quote
rpklich Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 I liked her record "Zoning" with Milton Suggs on bass. I believe Smithsonian reissued that set on CD. It was initially released on her own label, Mary. Not alot of musicians were putting out their own records on their own labels in the pre internet days in the 70s. Quote
seeline Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 CD reissue cover - IIRC, this is the 1st reissue Smithsonian Folkways did (of her back catalog, that is). Quote
Hoppy T. Frog Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 CD reissue cover - IIRC, this is the 1st reissue Smithsonian Folkways did (of her back catalog, that is). Any decent discographies? I too am entranced by MLW and would like to complete my collection. I've got a lot (most?) of what's currently available on CD but not the Chronological Classics. Quote

Head Man Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 My current "bathroom book". Thank for the heads-up, Chuck. My order to Amazon is on its way! Quote
randyhersom Posted July 23, 2009 Author Report Posted July 23, 2009 Yes a good read and certainly has enhanced my appreciation of the lady's music. I did procure the available Classics mp3s that I didn't already have, so I'm down to those 5 tracks that are on 1944 but not The Asch Recordings to take me up to 1954. Quote

mjzee Posted December 25, 2016 Report Posted December 25, 2016 A bump for this thread. Â Just listened to "Praise The Lord," the leadoff track from Live At The Cookery. Â Such drive for a 65-year old pianist! Â Bassist Brian Dorff can barely keep up with her. Â Totally timeless. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted October 14, 2018 Report Posted October 14, 2018 Mary Lou Williams is an artist I have known about for decades but barely explored.  I have an RCA Camden compilation called Modern Jazz Piano:  Four Views (CAL 384). The MLW tracks feature all-female bands.  The vibes player, Margie Hyams, also played with George Shearing.  Did these all-female groups record very much? Quote
Brad Posted October 14, 2018 Report Posted October 14, 2018 Here’s another vote for Nite Life, which a couple of posters have recommended.  Quote

This would've been in the mid 60s IIRC. Quote

jeffcrom Posted October 15, 2018 Report Posted October 15, 2018 Feather also produced a Mary Lou Williams session with a mostly female band for Continental - I've got the two 78s. Apparently no female bass player was available, so bassist Billy Taylor - B. Taylor - is listed on the label as "Bea Taylor." Quote
