EKE BBB Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 No tengo un dinero por los RVGs You mean 'No tengo dinero para los RVG', right? Quote
king ubu Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 No tengo dinero pero no quiero estos RVG... maybe upgrade the Art Taylor? The Jackie Mac has been out pretty recently, no need to upgrade that. The others I all have as part of box sets (Mosaics and the Complete BN Dex). Quote
Free For All Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 (edited) When I first came across "New and Old Gospel" long ago and saw the personnel, I was hoping that Ornette and Jackie would have some exchanges on alto. That would have been great! Ornette plays only trumpet on this one though, so be aware of that. Edited March 21, 2007 by Free For All Quote
JohnBlutarski Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 I'm curous about his trumpet playing, I only read about that in Miles' autoboigraphy. He wasn't very charmed about it... :) Quote

Niko Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 in europe this batch is already out. just bought 3 cd's, oa Thad Jones, here in Amsterdam at "Concerto", but discovered at home they put the TOCJ in it... weird... sounds like you bought one of those Spanish TimeLife Blue Notes which are on sale at the moment (easy way to check: if your cover is blue instead of yellowish this is the case) some of those are TOCJ (got Grant Green's Talkin About TOCJ this way yesterday) (but not all of these are TOCJs) previous thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=1180 Quote
Shrdlu Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 The McLean session is fantastic, I think (and I don't even like Ornette normally, and ya can't make me!). It's an honest, enjoyable session. Tells a story, as they say. Sure, Ornette didn't usually play the trumpet, but I like it, especially with the mute. Al Lion was very pleased with the date, too. The TOCJ of this sounds fine, so I won't be getting the new CD. Quote

(jewelcases and cd's are ofter kept apart in some stores, overhere) think I''ll go back and let them change it, some other person might expect a Japanes one, and is getting another one, too JB Quote
skeith Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 I picked up Compulsion!!! and this, in my opinion, is not as good as the previous recordings Hill made for Blue Note. I like the second half of this cd better than the first. Quote
BruceH Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 The McLean session is fantastic, I think (and I don't even like Ornette normally, and ya can't make me!). I wouldn't dream of it! Quote
BruceH Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 I'm continuing to dig the Taylor. Got the MacLean and Byrd already. Might pick up the Thad Jones sometime... Quote
J Larsen Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 I just picked up all but Clubhouse, which I'm not that interested in (I have the box and rarely play this session). None of the music is new to me, but so far I like the sound on the Hill, Taylor and Jones. Quote
skeith Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 I wanted to say one more thing and perhaps pose a question about Compulsion. I notice that on 3 of the 4 tracks the end is rather abruptly faded out when the band was clearly not intending to end the piece. I know that this release comes from the vinyl era, so does that indicate that the producer cut the track to fit on the LP or does this indicate that the producer felt the track wasn't going anywhere and made a decision to end it by fading out? Quote
mikeweil Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 Byrd's "The Cat Walk" is the only canidate for me in this batch - my LP is defective. I'm getting tired of those upgrades ... Quote
sal Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 I was VERY pleased with the Jackie McLean session. Having never heard it before, I had a feeling it would be very good, but its GREAT! The Thad Jones session, on the other hand, bores me to tears. I'll probably be selling this one. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 I like the BN Thad sessions AND Compulsion might be my favorite Hill session. The Hill "fades" sound right to me. Quote

I love Thad's writing, arranging and playing and the way they all connect to reflect his musical personality. To each his own! Edited March 29, 2007 by Free For All Quote
sal Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 (edited) Thad is one of my favorite trumpet players, and I was excited to hear this side as I had never heard it before. But to my ears, everyone sounds like they are on auto-pilot, and not one of the compositions stuck. edit to say that I do like Shadow Wilson on here, but that's about it Edited March 29, 2007 by sal Quote
