Al in NYC Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 Thad Jones - Detroit-New York Junction Yes!! Quote
mjzee Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 I love Clubhouse - one of my favorite BN Dexter's. Some of it has a very greeezy feel. Freddie is spirited. And "Devilette" is just wonderful - a great tune. This album should have been released, and Gettin' Around (a listless date) should have stayed in the can. Quote
Late Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 However, I haven't noticed the distortion. Will it hurt if you tell me where to look for it? (Hurt my pocket, that is, if I find I have to spring for an RVG.) MG I'll give it a spin tomorrow. As I recall (on the 1990 reissue), the distortion, or whatever it is, is only present two or three times on the disc. It sounds similar to the bell of a horn coming too close to the mike — a rattling, overblowing sound. I actually thought that this was the case, but when The Soothsayer, which had the same problem, was "fixed" back in 1998 (— the first reissue was 1990, I believe), it made me think that the same problem might be fixable on Clubhouse. The 1990 Clubhouse reissue also happens to be on the quiet/flat side (to my ears), so perhaps Rudy's amp-it-up treatment might actually be an improvement. I hope they keep the original Toshiba cover! (For some reason, I don't think Blue Note will. They didn't, at least, for Oblique.) Quote
sidewinder Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 I hope they keep the original Toshiba cover! (For some reason, I don't think Blue Note will. They didn't, at least, for Oblique.) These are from the King 'GX' LPs of the late 70s/early 80s by K Abe and I agree, they are great ! Quote
Kyo Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 (edited) Donald Byrd - The Cat Walk Dexter Gordon - Clubhouse Andrew Hill - Compulsion Thad Jones - Detroit-New York Junction Jackie McLean - New And Old Gospel Art Taylor - A.T.'s Delight I'll be getting the Andrew Hill and Art Taylor discs for sure. Still undecided whether to sell my Byrd/Adams Mosaic set and go for the individual albums or not. I have the McLean and Gordon albums on CD and will probably not upgrade them. Nice batch though, especially since that Clubhouse CD wasn't that easy to find for a decent price. Edited February 14, 2007 by Kyo Quote
Aggie87 Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 I've got the TOCJ of the Art Taylor, and it sounds fine to me, so I'm not gonna replace it. Some nice playing by Stan the Man too! Quote
riverrat Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 Still undecided whether to sell my Byrd/Adams Mosaic set and go for the individual albums or not. I've thought about this too. But if I'm not mistaken, there is some material on the Mosaic that is not available elsewhere on CD- the "Chant" session. Quote

Kyo Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 I've thought about this too. But if I'm not mistaken, there is some material on the Mosaic that is not available elsewhere on CD- the "Chant" session. As well as The Creeper session. Or did that see Japanese release? You are both correct. I just fear that both of those will be released individually soon, thus reducing the value of the mosaic set. Quote
mjzee Posted February 19, 2007 Report Posted February 19, 2007 The word "Delight" is very interesting. Why do so many Blue Note album titles or song titles include the word "Delight"? Is this something that jazz musicians would typically used in a title? Are there sessions on labels other than BN that used "Delight"? Or was this an Alfred Lion specialty? Quote
mjzee Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 Anyway, I preordered Old & New Gospel, AT's Delight, and The Cat Walk. Still wondering about the Delights. Tadd's Delight, Sid's Delight...I know there are others. Quote
milestones20 Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 I'll definitely go for the Hill and the Dexter, still not too sure about the Taylor (the clips on the allmusic guide didn't blow me away, but certainly weren't bad). Quote
Swinging Swede Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 I hope they keep the original Toshiba cover! (For some reason, I don't think Blue Note will. They didn't, at least, for Oblique.) They didn't. Quote
Big Al Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 I'm happy that another album from the Byrd/Adams Mosaic is being released, for those who missed out on that wonderful set. I wonder if the release of the Thad Jones disc means more to come from him. I hope! Quote
JohnBlutarski Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 (edited) in europe this batch is already out. just bought 3 cd's, oa Thad Jones, here in Amsterdam at "Concerto", but discovered at home they put the TOCJ in it... weird... Edited March 20, 2007 by JohnBlutarski Quote

BruceH Posted March 17, 2007 Report Posted March 17, 2007 The date is really coming up now... Can you feel the excitement? Quote
Late Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 The date is really coming up now... Can you feel the excitement? The 20th is here. Anyone already picked up the newest batch? I admit: I'm excited about picking up Compulsion!, even though I already have the music. Will probably pick up the Byrd, too. "Say You're Mine" is such a beautiful piece of music. Quote

Aftab Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 PIcked up the McLean (finally get to hear this!) and the Hill - haven't spun either yet . . . Quote
BruceH Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Picked up the Art Taylor and listened to most of it. Very nice. What a nice player Dave Burns was! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 I want 3 of 'em but will probably wait to see what shows up on Yourmusic. Quote
