Jazz Kat Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Hey, could somebody describe these albums to me. I couldn't picture Nat in a commercial, Creed Taylor produced album, but apparently he recorded some albums for A&M records. Are they were looking into? Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 why is it any harder to picture nat adderley doing that kind of thing than any of the other men and women who laid down creed taylor productions??? Quote
Rosco Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 I had (probably still have) one, the title of which escapes me. I saw in on LP going cheap and it had Zawinul on it, so I picked it up. A snooze fest, typical of CTI's worst excesses. Don't think I played it more than twice (the second time to make sure it sucked as badly as I thought it did the first). Quote
Rosco Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Oh, yeah, it was this one. Four and a half stars on AMG! It's been years since I played this, but I certainly don't recall Zawinul's "lively, funky electric piano". I just heard dull, as far as I remember. Quote
Noj Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 I have that one, too Rosco. It's been a long time since I spun it, but I don't recall anything memorable, either. Quote

The only reason I would want to hear this album is to hear the debut recording of Early Minor . The perfect marriage of content and form : Nat's varitone cornet playing By the Time I Get to Phoenix on this : Quote
DMP Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 I had his other A&M title ("Calling Out Loud"), it wasn't bad. Maybe a little over-ambitious. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 I had both for many years - I have to admit they were among those I sold when I needed to raise some funds, but they were fine, with some moving solos by Nat on 'em. Not over-commercialized. Not by any means. Just cleaner and somewhat shiny production and sound compared to his other LPs. The melodies still linger in my head, that's why I could afford to sell them - I knew them inside out. Give them a break .... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 "Artist" with no real "artistic vision" and a producer with lots of ideas about what is salable. Quote
robviti Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 if i'm not mistaken, nat uses a varitone attachment to his horn on some of these dates. that's the kiss of death in my book. Quote
