Bol Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 (edited) Just got this e-mail message from Mosaic: "The Cohn-Newman-Green sessions will be an April select. Ahmad Jamal is going throught the unissued Argo material very soon and we hope to have a set next year." The first is Al Cohn-Joe Newman-Freddie Green RCA sessions. I've been pestering them about these sets for the last 3 years. You guys should thank me. I've been a bit underwhelmed by their recent releases. These are gonna be great!! GA Russell Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 I've been waiting for an Ahmad Jamal box ever since the first deal with Universal. I hope it won't be too big. Quote
king ubu Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 That would be a Select of unreleased material of Jamal's trio with Fournier & Crosby? Or can you give a bit more detailed info? Quote

Really like the Cohn/Newman/Green select idea, that should have some great music. I too, haven't been overwhelmed by what Mosaic has to offer lately, though the Duke Ellington one is the first Mosaic in a long time that I am excited about buying. ghost of miles Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 Thanks for the update, Bol--I think I remember you mentioning this campaign to me last month when we met for coffee. Great news indeed! I have a buddy who's an Al Cohn fanatic & on the trail of the RCA material; he'll be jubilant when he hears this news. Quote
montg Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 Can anybody provide a rough overview of what would be in the Cohn/Newman/Green Select? I seem to remember Joe Newman as having a lot of RCA sessions, maybe more than would fit in a Select. On another note, I've been more than pleased with Mosaic's releases recently, I can't afford to keep up. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 (edited) There were four complete Joe Newman RCA Lps with Green and Cohn in the band on a French RCA twofer CD years ago - don't know how much more the one Green LP is - some of that was on some Bluebird CD for a while. Edited February 9, 2007 by mikeweil Quote
mikeweil Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 (edited) Besides the Newmans, Bruyninckx has the following Cohn LPs with Green in the band: The Natural Seven - Victor 1116 That Old Feeling - Victor 1207 The Jazz Workshop: Four Brass, One Tenor - Victor 1161 The Green LP, Mr. Rhythm, Is Victor 1210. Given they are all under 40 minutes, that would make 4 CDs. But: Cohn is only on three of the four Newman LPs, and "Feeling" was a strings album. Let's see what they make of it. Is there any confirmation that these four Al Cohn albums would be on the select issue? I can't find anything on the Mosaic website yet. There must have been several of us urging Mosaic to do this, since I had suggested an Al Cohn RCA box to Scott Wenzel a few years ago. Quote
Bol Posted February 9, 2007 Author Report Posted February 9, 2007 That would be a Select of unreleased material of Jamal's trio with Fournier & Crosby? Or can you give a bit more detailed info? I do not have the details. What's in the e-mail is what I know. I had been assuming that it would be a big box set of all of his Argo material. Quote

A big box would be on my list right away - I don't have ANY Jamal Argos. So Ahmad needn't look through the unissued stuff for me - I'll take a box of already released material. MG Quote
king ubu Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 MG, you ought to treat yourself to the "Cross Country Tour" 2CD set, just to get some of the best of Jamal's trio w/Crosby & Fournier! "Ahmad's Blues" isn't far behind, and then there's "At the Pershing / But Not for Me", which seems to be the most cherished single album, but I don't have it (most of it is in the "Cross Country" set, I think). king ubu Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Yeah, maybe that's a wise decision, but that particular trio is the best Ahmad ever recorded, I think. Nothing he did after that matches up, good as some of it is. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Well - the trios with Crosby and Crawford or Fournier were the tightest, with almost equally important contributions, whereas he was more the leader in later editions - I understand his move, he couldn't get any further with that concept, as perfect as it was. But I basically agree that it was his greatest achievement. Quote

And Idris kicks dead ass! MG Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Mosaic confirms Jamal Argo box...so sayeth my Night Lights alter-ego. Pulled out CROSS COUNTRY TOUR to celebrate. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Fantastic!!!! I've been holding off getting his Argo material in case a Mosaic turned up! Wonderful! MG Quote
jazzbo Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Great. I've got 90% of the Argo material now. Sure they come out with a box! Quote
andybleaden Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 I always find it occassions like this that if I have 90% already they only release a box with 85% However I do not have much of AJ...might have a look at this Quote

I bet there's a trillion unreleased cuts - or why would they limit it to the stuff with Crosby & Fournier? MG Quote
jazzbo Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Hmmm. . .looking at what I know about Argo sessions I would doubt there's "a lot" of unreleased cuts, some probably, but more than 10% of what's released very unlikely. Quote
king ubu Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 And what's the great news about the Cohn/Newman/Green? That one's been on the website for so long, hasn't it been out yet? The Jamal is good news, that's for sure! Quote
Bluerein Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Andy: and those 85% they will release includes the 5% you didn't have so you need to buy it anyway! I suspect Ahmad himself has some say in this so he probably want's only this material out. And the set will be manageable in size (5 CD's I think). Quote
