Templejazz Posted August 25, 2003 Report Posted August 25, 2003 Have most of the Horace Silver quintet material but I need more with Blue as a sideman. I have Timmons' Soul Time as well as Jackie's Bag, Hi Voltage, and a few others. Are there any more that are out there? Which ones do you like? Thanks B) Quote
Soul Stream Posted August 25, 2003 Report Posted August 25, 2003 Blue does some great work on John Patton's "Oh Baby." Also Harold Vick's "Steppin' Out." Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted August 25, 2003 Report Posted August 25, 2003 He's also on Jimmy Smith's Open House/Plain Talk session (one session, two LPs on one CD) with Jackie McLean (an alto alto) and Ike Q (a tenor tenor). In my opion Blue had the best trumpet sound for organ dates even if he never used them on his own records... Quote
Templejazz Posted August 25, 2003 Author Report Posted August 25, 2003 Forgot about some of these. I have the 'Open House/Plain Talk' and 'Steppin' Out'. How 'bout some non BNs I may not be aware of? Quote
Joe Posted August 25, 2003 Report Posted August 25, 2003 This one? Very early Blue on BN: And some prime early 70's Blue: Quote
The Mule Posted August 25, 2003 Report Posted August 25, 2003 Of the non-Blue Notes these are some faves: AND another Blue Note: Quote
Dmitry Posted August 25, 2003 Report Posted August 25, 2003 Have most of the Horace Silver quintet material but I need more with Blue as a sideman. If you got Doin' The Thing, you probably got the best. I love that disc. Quote

Templejazz Posted August 25, 2003 Author Report Posted August 25, 2003 Hmmm....It might be about time for me to snag the Turrentine Mosaic. Quote
John L Posted August 25, 2003 Report Posted August 25, 2003 Don't forget Junior Cook's "Junior's Cookin' " Blue is all over that one. I am assuming that you already have all of Blue's Riverside albums as a leader. Great stuff! Quote
Tom in RI Posted August 25, 2003 Report Posted August 25, 2003 Dolo Coker's release "California Hard" features Mitchell and Art Pepper in the front line, Art plays tenor on a couple of tunes. Quote
John L Posted August 26, 2003 Report Posted August 26, 2003 I just recalled that there is an excellent date with Groove Holmes: "Soul Mist" Harold Vick is also on tenor. Quote
JSngry Posted August 26, 2003 Report Posted August 26, 2003 Something completely different... Two live John Mayall albums, JAZZ BLUES FUSION and MOVING ON, although not earthshattering in even the least, capture Blue having a funky good time. Fellow sidemen include Clifford Solomon, Victor Gaskin, Billy Mitchell, Ernie Watts, and Charles Owens. Not anywhere near a "super jam", but it happened, and Blue actually sounds like he's having a blast. Quote
brownie Posted August 26, 2003 Report Posted August 26, 2003 Not only was there 'True Blue' on Xanadu but there was also 'Silver Blue' from the same Xanadu session. Well worth the search. Blue Mitchell was featured alongside Sam Noto (in addition to Dexter Gordon, Al Cohn, Barry Harris, etc.). And worthy of mention for Mitchell's contribution is Don Patterson's Opus de Don on Prestige (a Chris A. supervising job if I remember well). Quote
BFrank Posted August 26, 2003 Report Posted August 26, 2003 Not exactly a sideman date, but "Mapenzi" is a seriously great album. I HIGHLY recommend picking this one up. It's a real hardbop burner! Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted August 26, 2003 Report Posted August 26, 2003 I came to know of Blue Mitchell through releases by Ben Sidran. I think he was on a few of Ben's albums in the late seventies. I know that Ben kind of gets tossed into the lightweight smooth thing-he's not. His work in the mid seventies was some great, great stuff. Blue sounds very polished at this time. If you see any of Sidran's 70's Arista records around, grab em and check em out. 'Kiss in the Night' was my favorite of the ones with Mitchell. Do check out "Be Nice" (Ben's Solo) from 'The Doctor is In'. It could be the new OrgBB theme song! Quote
kdd Posted August 27, 2003 Report Posted August 27, 2003 some of his last appearances are among his best. Try the two sam jones records "something in common" and "changes and things" and the philly joe jones "advance" ("drums songs" on CD I think) Quote
BFrank Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 "Something In Common" is a GREAT album. I didn't realize that it was one of Blue's last appearances. Quote
kh1958 Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Just in case you missed it, the recently released Horace Silver live concert "Paris Blues" has some of the best Blue Mitchell (and Junior Cook) I've heard. Quote
