Durium Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 Bola Sete I bought myself a DVD with two 1960s Jazz Casual programs, because the first one contained a concert with Art Pepper . That program was not very good; the second program contained a, for me complete unknown, group, the Bola Sete-Vince Guaraldi Trio. The Bola Sete + Vince Guaraldi Trio shows the guitar playing of Bola Sete, a Brazilian guitar player, who is playing accoustical bossa novas on his guitar. What a great guitar player !! His guitar style is related to the guitar playing of Tal Farlow, Barney Kessel and George Van Eps. Bola Sete Keep swinging Durium Quote

Neal Pomea Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 I would like to find these. I have Oceans (on Lost Lake or Windham Hill). He and Baden Powell influenced John Fahey's bossa nova phase in the early 1980s. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 Not to mention that Sete has an album on the Takoma label... Quote
Neal Pomea Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 Originally on Takoma, reissued on Lost Lake. Same album. Don't see it on the Concord site. They acquired Takoma along with Fantasy. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 Takoma issued a lot of interesting stuff, most of which probably won't see the light of day under Concord. Side note: the first George Winston LP was issued on Takoma (later reissued by Windham Hill). Quote

Tom in RI Posted March 26, 2011 Report Posted March 26, 2011 Another big thumb's up for At the Monterey Jazz Festival. I haven't heard any of his work post mid '60's although from what I read he continued to change (grow?) as an artist. Quote
kh1958 Posted March 27, 2011 Report Posted March 27, 2011 Yes, Ocean Memories is a great record. Give it a try. Quote
jostber Posted March 27, 2011 Report Posted March 27, 2011 Yes, Ocean Memories is a great record. Give it a try. Got it last year, a brilliant record. Will check out more of his albums. Quote
Bluesnik Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 bola sate is very good. i have this same album and like it a lot, like everything out of brazil. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 Workin' On A Groovy Thing One of the first guitar-centric albums I ever bought. Maybe not one of his best, and definitely "of its time," but it still holds up all these years later. Quote
kh1958 Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 There's a new CD reissue of a Bola Sete album, Crystal Gardens. It' a superb solo effort, recorded in his home studio from 1970-72. There are three bonus tracks as well. Available from cdbaby.com. Quote
Pete C Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 Apparently, in Brazil, the 7 ball is the same as the 8 ball in U.S. billiards, which is how he got his stage name. Quote
seeline Posted January 14, 2012 Report Posted January 14, 2012 (edited) Apparently, in Brazil, the 7 ball is the same as the 8 ball in U.S. billiards, which is how he got his stage name. Yep. His real name was Djalma de Andrade. I have heard that his widow uses "Sete" as her last name, which seems very odd to me. Edited January 14, 2012 by seeline Quote
