Jazzin'D92 Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 I had a Regional audition yesterday, and I DIDN'T make it. Now I totally feel stupid and feel like just giving up. Quote

Guy Berger Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 Trust me, there will be many other auditions. In a few months you'll forget this audition ever happened. guy Quote
J Larsen Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 FWIW, not much worked out for me in high school at all, yet my life now is far better than I could have imagined back then. Let yourself be a little bummed out; that is normal and you really have to feel that way every now and then to have a complete and honest life. But also remember that it's just one audition that didn't go well and that sometimes judges make mistakes. Just keep working hard and good things will come. Quote
JSngry Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 Good to hear from you Danielle, was wondering where you'd gone off to. Now I know! Can anyone help me cheer up? :/ About the audition? Nope. What's done is done. Time to move on. About the future, yeah. Plenty to look forward to. Take the judges' critiques seriously. They're not going to make stuff up. Learn what you need to improve on, and get busy about doing so. Just remember that progress more often than not comes very slowly. This is not the type of thing to be getting into if instant gratification is what you're looking for. Also remember that every day, every second you spend on your instrument matters. If you're focused and are actually working on correcting shortcomings instead of just repeating them expecting them to miraculously fix themself (a trap a lot of people fall into), then no matter how gruelling the process might seem at the time (and trust me, there are times when it will be tortuous), eventually you'll get over whatever hump it is you're working to get over. Of course, there's always another hump waiting for you, but let's keep it positive for now. Also - if you were competing against all-grade high schoolers, hey, that's a tough nut to crack right there. You got kids who've been busting their ass for longer than you have. So of course they're going to be ahead of you. But you can bust your ass as hard (or harder) than them and move on up. In a few years, you'll be where they are now, and if you've done the right work the right way, it'll be your turn to be on top. If, otoh, you were competing against your grade-level only, hey - at least now you know what the competition is, and where the bar is set going forth. That's useful to know. But always, always shoot higher than that. So that's it right there - you went to a competition and didn't get what you went for. That hurts, I know. But you got what you need to take the steps to see to it that it doesn't happen again. So go for it, and make it so! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Keeping a stiff upper lip is good advise in most situations. Keep going. Quote
catesta Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Was this an American Idol audition? Quote
Joe G Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Nice to see you still around, Chris. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Good advice here. Keep on keepin' on. You'll get there! Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 31, 2007 Author Report Posted January 31, 2007 Thanks a lot guys, especially Jsngry! It took me like the rest of Sunday to get over it. But yeah I do realize now that I'm certainly not the best but nor the worst either. I was competing with all highschoolers that go to school within our region. The thing that brought me down the most was the sight reading piece, and of course dynamic changes. But I've moved on because after I saw that some of the best musicians at our school didn't make it, for the same reasons as I or they added some jazz into a classical piece...lol!!!! But I do plan on getting private lessons soon, so that hopefully will help! Umm.... Sorry guys for not being on so much, been busy with school and was preparing for regionals. But now things are kinda running slow, nothing really crackin around here. For now I'm just doing the concert season stuff, and some jazz band too. And also have been working on my drum major audition. I hope all is well with you guys!!! Danielle Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 Just so you know what kind of people we are, let me direct your attention to this very active thread: Female or Shemale? Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 31, 2007 Author Report Posted January 31, 2007 That test was pretty interesting....but FUNN. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 I hate auditions. I don't like the whole college music scene, or high school for that matter. Quote
robinjessome Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 I had a Regional audition yesterday, and I DIDN'T make it. Now I totally feel stupid and feel like just giving up. Don't worry about it - if you fuss and dwell on every missed opportunity/blown audition/fudged solo you'll never do anything productive. Brush it off, work towards the next goal....there's always another. Quote

GA Russell Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 Danielle, the greatest baseball player who ever lived was Babe Ruth. He set the lifetime record for home runs. He also set the lifetime record for strikeouts. Guess what! Nobody cared about the strikeouts record. I recommend that you not let your disappointments get you down. If you're trying to live life to the fullest, there will be a million more of them. Concentrate instead on your successes and your efforts to further succeed. You'll get better, you won't always get rejected, and good things will come your way. By the way, what instrument do you play? Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted February 1, 2007 Author Report Posted February 1, 2007 Thanks for the advice GA Russel!!! My main instrument is clarinet, but for jazz I play sax (alto and tenor) unless there is a clarinet feature or something like that. Then I can play flute and piccolo real well. Outside of school I play the violin. BAND NERD, I know. I plan on learning the oboe sometime soon..... I may want to get a scholarship off of it b/c I heard that they accept you faster or the instrument is in demand I shall say. Do you play anything? Quote

GA Russell Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 Do you play anything? Not anymore. I took seven years of piano lessons as a child, but it's been years since I sat down at the keyboard and tried to play anything. Quote
