mikeweil Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 Depends on what "funky" is for you - if you mean the soul-type Atlantic records sound, Detroit, The Gentle Giant, and the other LPs cut around that time include some. In a little more modern way, the CTI LP Artphysiopsychic has a funky beat foundation all the way through. Quote
Guest the mommy Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 chewy chew chew chew-"the doctor is in, and out" has the funkiest tracks. please, for the love of god listen to me. some of it is bad (some goofy throw away stuff) but the rest is pretty sweet. we are talking funky in a herbie hancock electric keyboard kind of way here, though. if you mean a more acoustic funky sound then perhaps as you said, "yusef lateef's detroit". all of his albums are inconcistent though. mikeweil Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 all of his albums are inconcistent though. Those Atlantics are a much better listen when arranged in recording order - I burnt them for myself in that order and like 'em much better that way. I have no idea why they mixed up the sessions so much. Quote
Shawn Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 I've always been partial to "The Blue Yusef Lateef" myself. Quote
Noj Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 I love "Hellbound" from The Doctor Is In...And Out. Kenny Barron also does a great version of the same tune, sans percussion, on the album Lucifer. Quote
Guest the mommy Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 chewy chew chew please for the love of god listen to me and now noj. "the blue yusef lateef" is not the funkiest of his albums. Quote
couw Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 "the blue yusef lateef" is not the funkiest of his albums. depends on how you define funky. With chewy's penchant for offthewall definitions, I'd say The Blue is still a contender as it is at least wacky enough without being disorganised. Quote
donald byrd 4 EVA Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 When/on what album did YL start incorporating the funk in his music? YL is one of the absent members of my jazz collection and I'd like to hear more of him. I hate to admit it but all I have is Eastern Sounds That being said, YL did teach at my school for a time and once I walked outside my dorm and there was car parked semi-illegally on the steps and I looked at the handwritten parking permit and it said "Yusef Lateef" on it. very happy day. my friend took his class and basically he said it consisted of 60 students on a variety of instruments playing a single note at various levels of intensity, and occasionally YL would instruct some of them to play a different note. My friend said the noise was totally insane. YL rules Quote
