EKE BBB Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 FYI: Previous thread on this set Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted January 25, 2007 Author Report Posted January 25, 2007 HEY U GUYS HEY U GUYS: I TRIED BIDDING ON ONE, WAS @ 20 BUCKS OR SO, I DROVE IT TO 60- STILL I WAS OUTBID- MAN I DONT WANNA PAY MORE THAN 75 BIG ONES FOR THIS RIGHT NOW. I MEAN, I REALLY WANT IT, BUT IT IS REDICULIOUS I HAVE LIKE ALL THIS OTHER CRAZY BIRD LIVE STUFF, RADIO B CASTS, AND PRIVATE RECORDINGS DUBBED TO LP, I HAVENT PLAYED MORE THAN 1 SPIN EACH, YET. I MEAN, SERIOUSLY. THE MAIN REASON I WANT THIS SET IS CAUSE ITS BIRD ON THE WEST COAST PLAYING W/ HAMPTON HAWES AND ADDISON FARMER N SHIT- THATS THE PRIMARY REASON. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 25, 2007 Report Posted January 25, 2007 SAVE UP AND BUY IT NEW FROM MOSAIC. THEY OWN THIS MATERIAL. THIS HAS THE BEST BOOKLET OF ANY MOSAIC SET EVER IN MY OPINION! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 25, 2007 Report Posted January 25, 2007 That set on eBay ain't gonna end cheap... Quote
mikelz777 Posted January 25, 2007 Report Posted January 25, 2007 (edited) That set on eBay ain't gonna end cheap... Probably not. A recent Monk Mosaic sat at about $60.00 for 4 days before the final bidding day and ended up selling for $160.00!! For a 3-CD set! At least the Parker set is still in print which should make it more reasonable. Edited January 25, 2007 by mikelz777 Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted January 25, 2007 Author Report Posted January 25, 2007 i dunno, i think im too young to be allowed to buy a mosaic set. if i buy a mosaic set it will make me like you guys Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 25, 2007 Report Posted January 25, 2007 i dunno, i think im too young to be allowed to buy a mosaic set. if i buy a mosaic set it will make me like you guys If you actually buy a Mosaic, buy the Johnny Hodges. Great, great set with lots of unissued material. You should appreciate more than the Bird set, especially since it doesn't have any 23 second tracks. Quote

Brad Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Aric, I don't know if you would like the Mosaic. Most of it is just Bird playing, not the whole song and the sound is not the greatest. It's mostly for Bird addicts (include myself there). Quote
Scott Dolan Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Aric, I don't know if you would like the Mosaic. Most of it is just Bird playing, not the whole song and the sound is not the greatest. It's mostly for Bird addicts (include myself there). I've been avoiding this box for exactly this reason. The mythology behind it, the concept, they sound really cool. And although I love to hear him solo, I'm not sure I'd really dig a box set of nothing BUT his solos. I have the Complete Savoy And Dial Studio Recordings box set and even though the music documented there is awesome, the wealth of alternate takes, false starts, etc...sometimes make it difficult to sit through. I mean, how many versions of Romance Without Finance are really necessary? I would think constantly jump cutting from one solo to the next would have a similar effect as far as listenability is concerned. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Well to be accurate. . . only about half the box really just jumps from Bird solo to Bird solo. On part of the Los Angeles stuff they allow bits of other music to slip in. In much of the New York material all or near all of a number is recorded. I thought this material would really bug me too. . . but to be honest. . . it's fascinating shit. And the booklet is amazing. You learn so much, and unexpectedly you learn a lot about Dean Benedetti that is so contrary to what Russell et al put out there, and is truly attention grabbing. And in the process learn something about jazz in the West Coast. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 (edited) chewy steal, beg, get a cdr, rip someone off or buy this cd i believe it's similiar to the mosaic set Edited January 26, 2007 by Soulstation1 Quote
RDK Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 I thought we weren't supposed to support bootleggers like Benedetti. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 This is one of those sets I'd love to spend a few weeks with, just to listen to once or twice -- and absorb the book. I'm not sure I want to own this set, but I'd love to "borrow" one for a little bit. (And no, not to burn it for myself, quite seriously. The number of burns of legit material that I own is miniscule, probably less than a dozen individual discs total.) Quote
