Kyo Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 (edited) There are at least three CDs taken from Johnny Griffin's performances at Copenhagen's Jazzhus Montmartre on March 30/31 1967. "The Man I Love" on Black Lion and two volumes of "Live at the Jazzhus Montmartre" on da music. www.jazzdisco.org lists the following LP releases: Johnny Griffin Quartet Johnny Griffin (ts) Kenny Drew (p) Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (b) Albert "Tootie" Heath (d) Copenhagen, Denmark, March 30 & 31, 1967 The Man I Love Polydor (G) 583 734 Hush-A-Bye - Blues for Harvey - The Masquerade Is Over - Sophisticated Lady - Wee - All the Things You Are Trio (J) PA 9737 A Night in Tunisia - Edacity Like You - Indiana - Rhythm-A-Ning - Rhythm-A-Ning Black Lion (E) BLP 30134 Old Folks - Wee - You Leave Me Breathless - Leave Me Alone Blues - * Johnny Griffin - The Man I Love (Polydor (G) 583 734) -> CD: same, BLCD 760107 * Johnny Griffin - A Night in Tunisia (Trio (J) PA 9737) -> CD: Johnny Griffin - Live at the Jazzhus Montmartre Vol. 1 - da music 874723-2 * Johnny Griffin - You Leave Me Breathless (Black Lion (E) BLP 30134) -> CD: similar to Johnny Griffin - Live at the Jazzhus Montmartre Vol. 2 - da music 874724-2 On those three CDs named above I have all of those tracks plus additional takes of Blues for Harvey and Wee (Theme) on Live Vol. 2. Mysteriously absent is the title track of the You Leave Me Breathless LP. The track lengths of the remaining pieces seem to match the LP otherwise. Can someone shed some light on this? Has this track ever been released on CD? Edited January 22, 2007 by Kyo Quote

Used to have "You Leave Me Breathless" on lp and never bought "Live Vol 2" 'cause the title track was missing and (I assumed) they duplicated Harvey and Wee from "The Man I Love". I may reconsider if the last two mentioned are alternates. Quote

The sound is a bit different though, that's why I didn't notice that when I quickly "scanned" them yesterday. That makes things even worse! Edited January 23, 2007 by Kyo Quote
Peter Friedman Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 (edited) I have a 2 CD set that includes ALL the material you listed from this session not on THE MAN I LOVE - BLACK LION BLCD 760107. It is JOHNNY GRIFFIN - HUSH-A-BYE - BLACK LION TKCB-70856 (Japanese) This 2 CD set has a total of 15 tracks and includes duplicates of 5 of the 6 tracks on THE MAN I LOVE cd. The only track on THE MAN I LOVE cd that is not on the 2 CD set is "The Masquerade Is Over". The track you are missing - "You Leave Me Breathless" - is on the 2 cd set. Of course this is still quite funny, meaning that I'd have to buy a two-disc set (a Japanese import at that!) plus The Man I Love just for that one track to get it all. Oh well, still beats buying three discs and still coming up one track short, eh? Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted January 25, 2007 Report Posted January 25, 2007 Don't even ask or wonder, Kyo! This policy of reissue labels of reshuffling, rearranging and (in the process) thoroughly mixing up everything in such a manner that you end up with a HUGE amount of duplicates even if you are NOT a 100% completist is one of the most annoying things to plague the more serious collector! Sometimes it makes you wonder if it is all part of a scheme of selling even more CD's by deliberately programming reissues in the most incoherent manner possible in order to take advantage of the completists out there who must have everything. Like I've said before elsewhere: I really envy the collectors of pre-war blues recordings. They do have at least some labels that give more consideration to the collector. One of those records I gave a spin the other day actually had the following statement after the track listing on the cover: "The remaining tracks of this group are found on .... - No duplications between these!" Now imagine that on jazz CD reissues with material from the late 50s/60s/70s (especially if a somewhat better-known name is involved ...)! Quote
