Serious question: I started buying Ellington recordings in the '50s, have about 250 cds and another 150 lps (not to mention 78s, 45's, 10" lps, reel tapes, cassettes, dats, etc). I still have not completely digested the Brunswick 45s in my collection. How the heck can you need more?

As I said, serious question.

Serious question.

I don't have a serious answer.

I've got about as much Ducal stuff as you do.

I WOULD like to complete the DETS . . . I'll buy all the cds that come out. I'd like to have "A Drum is a Woman" in a great Columbia cd edition. I could LIVE with that forward for some time, listening to the stuff I have. . . .Wouldn't need more. . . .

BUT I'd WANT more. You can get sort of addicted to collecting Ducal stuff.

-All the material has been issued before

This comes from somebody who got a review copy of this upcoming 8 CD set:

-Some 1940 broadcasts

-Fargo concert (2 CDs worth)

-1943 Carnegie Hall concert (2 CDs worth)

-and other tracks up to and including 1948.

So 4 out of 8 discs are the Fargo and the 1943 Carnegie Hall concerts. Though reportedly they have done a very good remastering job, it's bit deceiving, isn't it?

:(

Not having any of this stuff, it looks like a pretty attractive set. But

before I get overexcited and order both this and the DETs, does

anyone know whether this will include any of the DET material?

Hope some seasoned Ellington buff can help... I don't have the Fargo nor the Carnegie Hall concert (in fact, the only Ellington I own are the big Centennial box and Money Jungle). Is this a worthy purchase or should I pick them up separately elsewhere?

In my opinion, this would be a worthy purchase if you didn't have the material elsewhere! This is really fine music. If you like the forties material in the Centennial box, this is a go!

Thanks for your help... I'm enthusiastic about this box, yes. I was considering picking up the Storyville Fargo anyway.

Now that I have your ear, can you recommend a decent alternative to the MCA 'Early Ellington' 3CD set now that it has gone OOP? Or do you think perhaps if I hold on for a while it will see the light of day again?

Posted

I would bet you can find a used or not yet sold copy around. This was in print a long time!

There is a Definitive collection that almost completely mirrors it, but in my opinion the sound on the MCA is better and there are copious and helpful notes. I'd say see if you can find a copy of the MCA for a spell. It's not likely to show up in print again as the same thing, but one never knows.

oh man, I just got weak and ordered if from Amazon France for 43 eurozlotys (that is 46 minus VAT plus 5 for shipping). Not bad since I only have the Fargo (I did get the Carnegie sets from Fantasy in the zweitausendeins Fantasy sale, but never got the Storyville one to complete the run).

I returned home today to find a sealed copy waiting in the mail. Fantastic music which I am enjoying immensely. Thanks for the advice.

I have the Victor material too but the rest of the early Ellington recordings seem pretty daunting to collect... a dubious 40 CD boxed set or numerous OOP Chronological Classics. Is there an easier way?

VERY GLAD you decided to get that and did.

Well, there's the two cd OKEH recordings from Columbia, a good way to get a large chunk of essential sides. . . .

Too bad that the Masters of Jazz series has become defunct and so hard to find. . . that's an avenue I wish I could go . . . and I'd recommend if they were in print.
