(BB) Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 (edited) I recently picked up Lew Tabackin Trio ~ Black and Tan Fantasy. Lew on tenor for 5 tracks and flute for 2 John Heard on bass Billy Higgins on drums I just can't seem to get enough of this one, especially Lew on tenor. The jacket notes describe his tenor playing as “wild and woolly”, which I would say sums it up nicely. Are all his small group albums this good? It seems like he usually plays both flute & tenor, which of his other sides are heavy on the tenor tracks? Thanks in advance, Bill Edited January 19, 2007 by (BB) Quote
JSngry Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 I like this one, in spite of a little residual Concord "flavor remover": Quote
RDK Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 I'm fond of both of those, though I favor the trio session. "Flavor remover" is a great description of that Concord style. Doesn't mean it's bad though; far from it in this case. Quote
B. Goren. Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 Everything he recorded with Toshiko Akiyoshi worth listening. This is one of my faveorites: Quote
Clunky Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 I like Tenor Gladness with Warne Marsh despite what Chamberlain has to say about the date. Quote
Head Man Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 Everything he recorded with Toshiko Akiyoshi worth listening. I agree! I particularly like their big band recordings from the 1970's on RCA. Unfortunately they are only available as Japanese imports at the moment but are well worth seeking out. Having said that I also enjoy his Concord recordings from the 1990's: 'I'll be seeing you', 'What a little moonlight can do' & 'Tenority'. Of the three I prefer 'Tenority' but they are all excellent sessions Quote
mikeweil Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 I have another Concord, which is excellent and deservedly got ***** in downbeat. I'm not at home, so I don't have any more details at hand. Tabackin plays fine on two of Carla White's CDs, if you would like to hear him with a vocalist - they're a fine match. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 One of Lew's latest CDs, which I think is available from his web site at Jazz Corner, is another one with Lew in a killer trio. I may like it just a bit more than "Black & Tan Fantasy". This thread just reminded me that I recently picked up an old LT trio LP and I've forgotten to spin it! I'll have to rectify that this weekend. BTW, that "Tenuki's Night Out" CD is a Japanse import, complete with obi (when I got one in). Quite a steal at $16. Kevin Quote
Hot Ptah Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 This album, "Rites of Pan", is a great one. It is my favorite Tabackin album. It cries out to be reissued on CD. There is some seriously great and beautiful music on this album. Of the Akiyoshi-Tabackin Big Band albums, I think that Lew is heard to great advantage on "Long Yellow Road" and "Farewell"--with Mingus' silhouette on the cover. Quote
(BB) Posted January 19, 2007 Author Report Posted January 19, 2007 Thanks for the info. I already have Tenuki's Night Out, as much as I like it, it doesn't have the same attraction for me that the small group stuff does. I will look for those Concord sides and Tenor Gladness with Mr. Marsh sounds particularly interesting. Quote
relyles Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 I like Tenor Gladness with Warne Marsh despite what Chamberlain has to say about the date. Agree 100% Quote
Matt Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 The Lew Tabackin / Phil Woods CD is excellent! Quote
Hot Ptah Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 The Lew Tabackin / Phil Woods CD is excellent! Especially the first song, as I recall--Phil and Lew really tear it up. The album's cover art must set a record for the most reeds pictured on an album cover. Quote
mr jazz Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 Desert Lady and Pyramid are two I like. A fine artist. The Carnegie Hall concert with the TA big band is good as well. I saw them with guest artist Frank Wess at Blues Alley in DC many moons ago. Great show. Quote
Quincy Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 The Lew Tabackin / Phil Woods CD is excellent! Especially the first song, as I recall--Phil and Lew really tear it up. The album's cover art must set a record for the most reeds pictured on an album cover. I can vouch for that one too. For some reason when I glance at the cover I think I'm seeing really bad french fries. Quote
BruceH Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 The Lew Tabackin / Phil Woods CD is excellent! I've been meaning to get that one. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 The Lew Tabackin / Phil Woods CD is excellent! I've been meaning to get that one. I wouldn't wait too long. I think it's been oop for quite a few years now. It isn't hard to find now but it may start disappearing, especially if enough people reading this thread start looking for it. Quote
mikeweil Posted January 25, 2007 Report Posted January 25, 2007 That's the Concord I have -excellent! Quote
(BB) Posted March 3, 2007 Author Report Posted March 3, 2007 I like Tenor Gladness with Warne Marsh despite what Chamberlain has to say about the date. Just arrived in the mail today, I've only listened to it once through and really loving it. So far Basic #1 is the track that really stood out and put a smile on my face. Bill Quote
Rabshakeh Posted January 26, 2022 Report Posted January 26, 2022 Can anyone recommend me a good Lew Tabackin record that is small group and which slants towards his tenor playing? I have and like Dual Nature and Tenor Gladness already. Quote
JSngry Posted January 26, 2022 Report Posted January 26, 2022 It suffers from Concord Syndrome, but Tabackin himself is on point. Quote
HutchFan Posted January 26, 2022 Report Posted January 26, 2022 (edited) This overlooked Shelly Manne LP from 1977 features outstanding playing by Tabackin: Five of seven tracks on tenor; two cuts on flute. Edited January 26, 2022 by HutchFan Quote
