bertrand Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 A DVD of the Santana/Shorter Montreux 1988 show is due out 2/27. I was under the impression it would include the Shorter composition 'Ballroom In The Sky' from this tour. It has otherwise never been officially recorded, and I listed it as part of this DVD in the inventory to be included in the forthcoming paperback of Michelle Mercer's bio. I can't find a track listing anywhere, but it is a 64-minute DVD and I know that's not the whole concert. Any leads would be deeply appreciated. Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
Claude Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 (edited) This was released as a CD+DVD set in Japan in 2005, but I'm not sure which tracklist is for the DVD: http://www.hmv.co.jp/product/detail/1495393 Edit: according the HMV, it's on 3 discs: http://www.hmv.co.jp/product/detail.asp?sk...393&track=1 Edited January 16, 2007 by Claude Quote
Claude Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Well, here's the tracklist of the US release, from amazon.com: SONGS: Spiritual - Peraza - Shhh - Incident at Neshabur - Elegant People - Goodness & Mercy - Sanctuary - For Those Who Chant - Blues for Salvador - FIreball 2000 - Ballroom in the Sky - Once It's Gotcha - Mandela - Deeper, Dig Deeper - Europa http://www.amazon.com/Carlos-Santana-Wayne.../dp/B000KGH08O/ P.S.: Why do so many Americans call the city "Montreaux" Is there a popular liquor with that name? .:.impossible Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Probably something to do with Montreal. Quote
Quincy Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 P.S.: Why do so many Americans call the city "Montreaux" Is there a popular liquor with that name? Because we pronounce wrong as well, sort of like the beau in Beau Geste. Which isn't correct from what I understand. Quote
Guest youmustbe Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 I heard this band in NY and Philly....great Wayne! I have videos that Carlos sent me....as well as the 1990? band Wayne had with Coryell, Beard, Jeff Andrews, Ronnie Burrage...too bad on beta, and don't have machine so i can't watch them. Quote

How is it pronounced? I always pronounce it MontrROW. Is it pronounced MontROO? I think I will pronounce it MontROOX on principle from now on. Guy Quote
bertrand Posted January 16, 2007 Author Report Posted January 16, 2007 What material was Wayne playing with Coryell in 1990? Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
Guest youmustbe Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Who cares how they want it prnounced! It's our tourist money!!! MOUNTROH! Quote
bertrand Posted March 7, 2007 Author Report Posted March 7, 2007 (edited) OK - this is getting thornier by the minute. CD Universe claims it's 64 minutes, so I don't think all the tracks on the Amazon listing are there. The tunes are available as digital downloads on iTunes. It's all the tracks Claude listed (plus two percussion solos and an interview), and the total time is about 2 hours. So, I think the DVD does not have all the performances (why not, there would be room enough!). I can get all the music from iTunes. CD Universe also shows a UK import of the CD (which I would prefer to iTunes), but it's backordered. So now I have to: 1) Hold off on the DVD, in case I can get hold of a reasonably-priced import with the whole concert. 2) Hold off on the iTunes, in case the UK CD becomes available. Bertrand. Edit: Amazon lists a 2-CD set coming 3/27/07. Again, it's all the iTunes tracks (minus the percussion solos and the interview?). So problem 2 is resolved, I just have to wait a month. Problem 1 remains - the US DVD will probably be incomplete, and I know the complete DVD has been available in Japan, but I don't want to spend a fortune. Other issue: I had been told about the DVD, but not the CD, when I prepared the appendix with Michelle Mercer for her Wayne bio (it's out now, BTW). So the appendix only lists 'Ballroom In The Sky' as being part of a DVD, not a CD - and I'm not sure if this track is one of the ones included on the DVD or not. I just received both DVD and CD (the 2-CD version). They have the same tracklist, so "Ballroom in the Sky" is on both. DVD is 126 minutes long, and it's the European version (PAL). luca Quote
JSngry Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Just got to hear the 2-CD release, & other than a version of "Sanctuary" that rapidly turns into a mindless shuffleboogie feature for Santana, I enjoyed it immensely+ . Recommended, and pretty highly too, although admittedly after only one lsiten. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 (edited) I listen to the CD more than watch the DVD. I wish the DVD had been part of the Eagle Vision Live at Montreux series, the quality is so much better and they have easy menus to get around. The DVD has no song selection feature which is slightly annoying. Does the Japanese version contain longer versions of seemingly edited tunes? I looked at the Montreux Sounds site before I got it and found there are 2 missing tracks, and "Incident at Neshabur" clocks in at 17 minutes, whereas its 9:21 on the double album and DVD. Either way I bought the album too cuz well, excellent music IMO. Patrice Rushen steals the show on more than one occasion. Edited April 30, 2007 by CJ Shearn Quote
